(FT5) HOT! Olympus E-5 to be announced on September 14. New E-P2 kit and new MFT lenses on Tuesday (August 31)

UPDATED: I have no doubts anymore. The new Olympus E-5 will be announced on September 14. It has 12Megapixel, two more than the “older” E-3. It has the new TruePic 5 engine for better detail, 720p hd video at 30p, 11 pt af, 920k dot res lcd, 3 inches, art filters and a mic jack.
Tomorrow (August 31) a special Olympus E-P2 kit will be announced + two new MicroFourThirds lenses!
Expect me to post some specs as soon as I get some confirmations from other sources. Stay tuned!!!

Well let’s hope it is a new 12MP sensor or at least the one from the GH1. The E-30/E-620 sensor would be a HUGE disappointment. The rest also sounds rather boring.

I bet there will be a great new feature. At least I hope so.
zigi_S
2 years ago |Even with a GH1 sensor the E-5 will probably lag a stop or stop and a half behind the competitors. Hope oly gives us at least some cheap fast primes.
Jason
2 years ago |It does not make sense that the E-5 would have only 720p at 30 frames. It should have 1080p/30 and 720/60 frames – even the GF1 can be upgraded via a hack. Finally, a decent screen at least.
I thought the E-620 and GH1 shared the same sensor?
Kevin
2 years ago |If it is announced as stated, it sounds more like last ditch appeasement for e-3 owners, but not an upgrade for for those of us who wanted to upgrade our entry level. If I am right, then I think I will get the 7D. Its not perfect, but looks pretty good. Its lenses will be supported & upgraded. I have seen some beautiful bif and other wildlife shots with it.

2 years ago |Since when did the E-3 have 12MP?
Additionally, if it really was the exact same camera with ONLY 720P (30fps) video and a nicer LCD added then I’m DEFINITELY NOT going to purchase it. If ISO performance and C-AF non-performance are unchanged I see NOTHING desirable/competitive in this camera (unless it’s priced at $599USD).
I hope you’re wrong- I really want to stay in the Oly camp but it sounds like OLY might not be able to fulfill my upgrade needs.

2 years ago |After the E30 I was waiting for a while for the new FLAGSHIP but got bored so I got the Canon7D for 1250+ USD in May. Reading the forums I’m pretty sure I am not the only one who got bored waiting…
Now I’m thinking:
1. how many would even consider buying the new FLAGSHIP w/12mp, 720vid, art filters after the “old” cams like 7D,5D2,D300S..etc out there.
2. how much this Wonder will cost?
I still love Oly, we spent sone great time together but if you plan to print at 16×20 or larger and or want to sell to stock due to the cropping I expected nothing less than 15-16mp.
simon
2 years ago |“1. how many would even consider buying the new FLAGSHIP w/12mp, 720vid, art filters after the “old” cams like 7D,5D2,D300S..etc out there.”
I would. I’d like to retire my E-1 and keep using my lenses, I don’t print larger than A3 size and I’d like to be able shoot basic videos. You are correct that it’s not likely to appeal to a non-Olympus audience, but my guess is that the E-5 is mostly meant to appease current 4/3 owners while Olympus works on m4/3.
jeff
2 years ago |well picturesbyme
The main reason i will be picking this camera up instead of a 7D is because olympus makes better lenses and even better cameras.
more megapixels= more noise and the need for more memory and the fact that it takes longer to load pictures to the computer for editing with 18 meg raw pictures than it does with 12 megs.
I could care less how much it costs because i have been saving and it will most likely take better picture than a 7D
Tim
2 years ago |This is exactly what I wanted. A normal SLR. No funny evf’s, crazy autofocus methods, cramped bodies.
Just give me a normal DSLR that has good dynamic range, low noise, and good detail, and of course the beautiful Olympus JPGs.
I’m very happy. 12 megapixels can do everything a photographer needs if done right, and it saves on the hard drive space.
95 % of my clients print 11×14 and below, and most just want digital images now.
The movie mode is a nice add in also. I’m hoping they come in below the price of the 7D or it might be hard to justify buying it.
jeff

i am really interested to see if they tackled the noise issue in micro43s because if they did it will be fantastic

2 years ago |D3s is a 12MP. 12MP is more than enough if E-5 can have more than 8fps and improve dynamic range while keep body relatively compact
IllBeAnonymousForThisOne
2 years ago |Also consider the direction of Olympus. M43 may be a great amateur camera, but the sensor size will not get professional use. Also the Modular camera concept is a bridge camera (to what?). So what does this mean? Maybe it means Olympus is no longer interested in improving digital photography, but miniaturizing it. Does this mean they are marketing the P&S market with a better mousetrap?
Don’t blame me, it just looks this way.
Prove me wrong, please!!!!!
What do you think?
Boooo!
2 years ago |m4/3 and 4/3 sensors are identical. The only different things are the mount and the flange distance.
There is nothing preventing Olympus from producing a m4/3 body the size of an E-3 if they want to, or even a body the size of a pickup truck.
Greg
2 years ago |Yeah sure, go tell the GF1 ans EP-1 and two EP-2 owners that they have a point and shoot. It’s just the logical evolution of photography: less mechanical part, as much control picture quality, less weight, more fun taking pictures…

Oly has competition out there! They can’t just lean on the fanbase here.
Btw, I printed and sold photos at 8×10 from 1.3mp, 11x14s from the c2100, 16x20s from the c8080 and a ton of 16x20s from the e510 and e30.. so..? If all you need is 5mp would you throw your e3,e30 on ebay? If one needs only 5-6m why to read this post about the E5 on the first place??
Miroslav

2 years ago |Nikon and Olympus know how to get the most, with less pixels. Canons and point & shoots seem to have the highest numbers of megapixels, but I think for the most part, it is unnecessary for most users.
Plus, I think it is the lower megapixel count that allows Nikon and Olympus to users to create shots that mimic film grain.

2 years ago |..so if the specs are not correct and it’s more than 12mp none of the fanboys will buy it? Cool, then I might will pick one up
.
..also Well Jeff if your e3 (if you have onw) is better than the 7D you need new glasses
..people are crying over hdd space (1TB under $75) when it’s dirt cheap, while they are willing to shell out anything (1.6-2K)for a new cam w/specs what could have been released a year ago under for 1.2-1.4K…… WoW that’s some logic….
jeff
2 years ago |No the “fanboys” will still buy it, they invested money in the best digital lenses money can buy and plan to continue to use them with new bodies.
BTW the problem isnt the amount of space , its the fact that it will take forever and a half to transfer 400 18meg raw shots
I have a 2 tb hard drive btw space isnt an issue its the fact that computers wont have better transfer speeds for at least 3-4 years since USB is reaching its limit.
Spending 1.5k on a camera that is built smart with photographers in mind is better than spending 1.1k on something that will be replaced the next year with something barely better based on numbers (not functionality)
And no i dont have an E3 i have a e420 and out of all the cameras that i have messed with olympus is the only company that makes sense when designing cameras (pentax is the only other example i can think of)

Not that great? Maybe you’re right.. but compared to what? so far it better than most of my Oly gear I ever used (minus the tilt lcd) and it’s not even a flagship… so..? I’d like to see an Oly flagship but with a little more cowbell than 12mp and 720p, even if I won’t use vid. It still need to compete with all the cams on the shelves. 2 years ago |As an anti-canonite, who would have thought I’d switch to that of all camera’s, but now the 7d is my front-runner. I have been looking at truly incredible 7d images for the last 24 hours, it does take very good pictures.
Even if the E-5 is what I am looking for, I must consider my 43 lens investment is already obsolete. If I want an E-5, will I invest more in the 43 dead horse.
I am still here in this forum, because I truly hope Oly will announce something that will change my mind. That is what I want, I just doubt it will happen.
Picturesbyme
2 years ago |Exactly….
The e30+12-60 is amazing and I never thought I will buy into Canikon, but after waiting and waiting I tried a D300S and 7D. However a camera is nothing but a tool and I am not married to a brand name.
Those who think Zuiko is superior should try the 7d with a cheapo 15-85IS or 70-300IS, or a D300s w/a decent nikkor see what that can do… not to mention C-AF..
I always was – and a little still rooting for Oly but if they bring out 12mp, 720p and art filters even if it’s inexpensive… how long will that hold up vs the competition?

2 years ago |Well, 720p video is pretty much a non feature. Why even bother? I was hoping (probably foolishly) that this camera would be a 1080p video wonder. I had no reason for hoping that, but I was hoping it.
I guess I could still buy it if it has a vastly improved sensor with better dynamic range and better low light performance and usable high ISO. With better low light focusing.
The specs quoted here do not excite me in the least. But, that doesn’t mean that the actual camera will not blow me away if they have dramatically improved the stuff described above.
But, seriously, not as good of video as the GH1? Really? I may end up buying a GH2 if this is what Oly comes out with.
Actually, I’ll probably just stick with my E-3 and save for a real video camera.
jt
2 years ago |I agree Steve. A bit disappointed in the video. However, if there are manual controls over the video I could probably make do with 720p. We just have to wait and see.

2 years ago |agree
1080 for me is not a must, I will be fine with 720 but… 30fps will be disappointing.
If that is the case I will really consider sticking with my e-3 and getting a GH1 or GH2.
Unless the e5 can really help my 35-100mm in low light focusing drastically, I wont buy it.
12mp is fine, 11pt af fine, 8fps good,
but 30fps is very disappointing.
Hopefully there is more to e-5 then we know right now.
jt
2 years ago |You are correct. 30fps is also a big disappointment. Honestly, I don’t even know why they bothered to put video in this thing if they’re gonna do it half ass. All the old school photogs on DP Review who bitch about video in their DSLRs would then have a new DSLR without video to buy- it might give the camera a bit of street cred. If these specs are correct I don’t see too many switching over to Oly for this. This camera sounds like something cobbled together to appease those who have already heavily invested in Oly glass and have been clamoring for an E3 replacement.

2. The AF better be accurate and no hunting.
3. 720@30 FPS, comon my mobile phone can do that.
This looks like the end of my time with oly. Where is the long reach I bought into? Unless they got some innovation up there sleeve, I am joining all the rats of the ship. I will keep my e-3 and the 50-200 for the harsh life at the windblown beach.

E-X
2 years ago |and 60fps video
Steve H
2 years ago |Well, 60 fps video isn’t all that necessary, in fact, people would probably be happier if it was 24 fps, actually. Really, it’s the 720p versus 1080p that’s got me down. Most of the 60 fps stuff is really just 1080i. What would be nice is the option to record at 1080p or 720 p at 24 fps or 30 fps.
It’s funny that someone posted that their phone does 720p. EXACTLY. It’s almost not even a feature any more. Now, if it’s 720p with full manual controls, that’d be somewhat interesting, but not NEARLY as interesting as 1080p.
I’m not giving up on them, this is a rumor site after all, and hopefully the rumors don’t reflect the true capability of the camera. I hope that what they come out with blows me away.

This has simply got to be a tease from Olympus.
Let’s see, 12 MP, that’s the same as my E620 introduced 1 1/2 years back and the 2 year old D90 which is about to be replaced with a higher MP model. TruePic 5 from the E-PL series which sells for $500? 720p 30p video like 10 of the travel zoom compacts DPReview recently tested (excuse me, one of these was 1080)? 11 pt AF like the D5000? 3″ 920k LCD like the 2 year old D90? And to even mention “art filters” as a feature on a high end DSLR is frankly pretty embarassing.
A camera with these specs could have been introduced well over a year ago with parts off the shelf. Hell, they could have simply done a K7 knock-off with an Olympus tweaked sensor and processor and many would have been happy.
I hope there’s more to this camera than these outdated specs or Olympus 4/3′s is kaput in today’s marketplace.

Perhaps this is the so called “creative destruction” of Joseph A. Schumpeter… the only resting life after death:
micro four thirds or perhaps a “modular camera” with two options:
1. a fullframe module (mirrorless)with new modified zuiko lenses
(11 contacts, SWD (!) …, motor zoom for video)
2. a micro four thirds module with professional bodies
(for example: wheather sealed, flip out, rotating lcd sreen)

if they want to get image like in d300s or 7d, they have to stop chasing mpixelz, 12 is far enought, and then work on image quality, DR, high-ISO noise, and overall noise structure. Damn noise from old C5Dmk1 is mych more “natural, even from damn-so-old CCD e-400 noise is way way better than from new 12mpix livemos… (i had e30 and e3, now got d700. ehh, nothing to compare…)
Tobias W.
2 years ago |I actually don’t care about 12 or 15MP. I want higher ISO values with less noise. I want a sturdy body that survives a shower without any problem. And the camera should be fast. Then I’m happy. I have been waiting for this for a long time now, postponing buying an E-3 upgrade to my E-520 body. I hope the price for the E-5 will be OK, then I’ll order right away, otherwise I’ll give it until next year.
clark
2 years ago |I’m also in the camp that doesn’t care about anything more than 12mp. As long as it makes clean files at significantly higher iso, better DR etc I’ll be happy.
The video is certainly disappointing here. Unless it’s a higher bit rate etc for a very clean 720p.
I’d like to see some innovation in the mirror, shutter and viewfinder. Lets have a brighter viewfinder, and super silent shutter.
All the rest sounds fine… so thats my wishlist

What about a Fuji sensor?

2 years ago |I’m still waiting for that “special feature”… These specs don’t sound special at all.
12MP is great for my purposes. It’s big enough for wedding prints and it has potential for good DR and low noise. Why are you guys thinking that Oly would use a 2 year old sensor for their flagship? I’m sure that this will be a new design.
11 autofocus points is great. I would never want more. Just selecting one of 51 or so points would be a pain. I hope they have improved the AF, especially C-AF. I would like the autofocus points to be a bit more dispersed around the viewfinder.
I don’t do video, so 720p is fine.
I hope the bigger screen is still articulated.
Art filters… That a cheap way to grow the specs list! It eats the professional status of the camera too. Silly, but I somehow enjoy how E-3 doesn’t even have a mode dial.
Let’s just hope that it will be faster and even more rugged than E-3!

2 years ago |What will be the fate of the other test camera with the 15 MP sensor? Was it a dead end that will not see the light of day? Was it a possible earfly prototype for an E-5 follow-on (i.e., an E-6)?
I am disappointed in the leaked alleged specs for the upcoming E-5, but maybe the alleged specs are wrong or there are some other enhanced features that make the E-5 very desirable. I have been with Olympus since beginning my foray into digital photography over 10 years ago. I will wait until after Photokina and the official announcements before making any decisions on the direction for any new camera system gear that I buy.

2 years ago |Hm. This could still be an interesting camera for current FourThirds users wanting to trade up, especially if it has some long-asked-for features like focus confirmation with legacy lenses, in-camera HDR imaging and improved high-sensitivity performance; but I cannot see how it could excite users of other camera brands. I mean if it had a 15mp sensor AND 10fps AND 4k video ALONGSIDE everything you would expect from a digital SLR camera these days, THEN it would turn heads… but these specs do not sound exciting from a competitor user’s perspective.

2 years ago |Well, um, 4K video might be asking a bit much, there, don’t you think? Considering the Red One is a $20,000 camera, and the Red Epic is even more.
But, yeah, 1080p video is pretty much mandatory. Like the one guy said, my phone does 720p video.

2 years ago |Keeping in mind that these are just rumors…
These specs sound like an E-30 successor, not and E-3 successor. I think that is entirely possible.
That said, I’m a happy E-600 user, and I’m totally happy with 12mp. What would get me to buy a new body is:
- Better low light focusing
- Lower noise at 800 and 1600 asa
- Weather sealing like E-3
- Better dynamic range at 100 asa (the highlight clipping at 100 asa on my E-600 drives me nuts)
- Viewfinder at least as good as E-3
That’s really all I want, anything else is just driving up the price for things I’m not all that concerned about. That said, to compete in the marketplace, I don’t see how 12mp and 720p will fly, unless the cost is significant;y lower than the competition. So as an upgrade to, and at the same cost as the E-30, I can see it. As an E-3 replacement, it’s all down to if the sensor can really deliver better performance.

2 years ago |Remember how much the e3 was when it came out?
I doubt that this will be lower but now time passed a bit and there are several other players on the field… so let’s hope that they packed some must-have-new-features in that body for that 1.7K.

2 years ago |I was thinking of a price tag in the range of $2K USD for something significantly better than my E-30, which is not weather sealed and does not support video.
- Weather-sealed
- 1080p 30 fps or 60 fps video
- Articulating LCD
- Somewhat improved resolution (MP – megapixels) but skewed more towards better ISO performance over just MP
- Faster write/frame rate
- Faster autofocus
I don’t think those features are out of range for a $2K USD camera body.
Additionally, I am hoping for:
New telephoto to replace the discontinued Sigma 135-400 and 50-500
Some optical/electrical adapter to use u4/3 lenses on the 4/3 mount
Then I would feel comfortable dropping $2K on a new 4/3 DSLR by knowing that I won’t get stuck with a good camera with little new lens development.
