(FT5) First Full size pictures of the E-M5!!! (via Amazon Japan)
Finally that small image leak madness is over. This is the first full size picture of the upcoming new Olympus E-M5! As you see there is an external battery grip attached. It has an OM-4T like design. And here is the picture of the back (Click on it to enlarge):
This picture have been found at Amazon Japan (Click here). There is even a picture of a person with the new camera (Click here) on a polish forum!
Design opinion: As I told you yesterday the back of the camera looks a bit clunky. At the same time it looks very solid and “DSLR professional” alike. It’s a complete different approach than a Fuji X PRO 1 rangefinder design. The question now is:
Reminder: The camera will be announced next Wednesday February 8th. You can follow the event live here on 43rumors! You can join our group on facebook and follow our tweets.

The theoretical difference in sensor performance between APS-C and Micro Four Thirds is marginal, only 3/4 of an aperture stop.
* * * * * * * * * *
The sensor performance differences will become asymptotically flattened out in near timeframe, so any differences in low light performance using high ISO settings, as well as dynamic range will be practically nothing to worry about.
Rather, the serious photographer will be more concerned with the lenses providing acceptable wide open performance, good bokeh, compact size, weight and weather sealings.
With the Micor Four Thirds lens portfolio expanding, from ultrawide zooms, through a set of bright primes (20mm/F1.7, 25mm/F0.95, 25mm/F1.4, 45mm/F1.8, 45mm/F2.8 Macro, 60mm/F2.8 Macro, 75mm/F1.8,…, and in due time support of the classical Four Thirds lenses, a majority of photo scenarios are covered.
Take the 24.3 megapixels sensor from the current Sony trio (SLT-A65, , SLT-A77, NEX-7), cut out a MFT slice from it’s original APS-C size, and you’ll get a 15 megapixels sensor perfectly fitting the Olympus 4:3 aspect ratio. And if that’s not sufficient, make the sensor oversized with multi aspect ratios (16:9, 5:4, 4:3, 3:2, 1:1) further narrowing the size difference to the APS-C.
You’ll get the same low light performance, the same dynamic range ratio as from the sensor in the NEX, but with Olympus image processing, and the MFT lenses added, I just cant see any reasons to blindly stay with an APS-C fixation of yours…

– *Is the OM-D the secret weapon they’ve been sitting on for some time, to pull out when in danger and doubt times?*
– *What triggered the release of the OM-D right now?*
– *Why haven’t we seen it until now?*
– *Hasn’t it been perfectioned until now?*
– *Hasn’t all bits and pieces forming a system been available until now?*
– *How important is the fact we’ve just seen competitors launching advanced models within this year?*
– *Is there a launch synchronization made with Panasonic? What are they up to now?*
– *I sincerely hope it’s not just a show off to the white-collar of an eventually sell out of the Imaging division of Olympus?*
– *Rather I hope this “OM-D System” is pulling more capital investments into the Olympus Imaging division, seing the OM-D prosper significantly and getting a strong foothold in the market!*

2 years ago |Well, I suppose one could use that hump to scratch one’s ass with or something.
The little issue with your entire point is that the Fuji X100 is a rangefinder style camera and won camera of the year last year. The new pro version Fuji is another rangefinder camera and it too will go on to win camera of the year.
The Olympus E620S (s = slim body) will be all but forgotten by fall.

2 years ago |What a waste designing and building a brand new camera around a sensor type that has reached a dead end. APS-C is the future for the years to come. Micro 4/3 sensors are just too small to give good low light performance, smooth tones and rich detail. Yes, AF may be quick, the view finder from heaven and the lenses superb, but if the heart of the camera doesn’t deliver, it’s a no go for most serious photographers. And it seems that this is the target group for this expensive tool. I don’t think that this camera is serious competition for the Fuji X100 let alone the X-Pro1. Back to the drawing table it is….

The m4/3 mount w/ its reduced flange-back distance does not have room for a mirror! I thought everybody had understood that by now. And it’s not an APC-C either, for those dim enough to think so. I’m just so fed up with these obfuscated thoughtless comments in here. Jeez – give me strength… :-/
The hump is for the EVF (optics and circuits), along w/ an accessory port and probably also a flash. Otherwise, the EVF would have protruded backwards from the body, like on the Pannys.

BUUUUT… when I step back 1 min, I found that GX1 X kit + LVF2 also costs around $1100~1200.
For basically the same price of EM5, I got the same sensor, about the same EVF. And, I have one additional wonderfully compact 14-42X lens.
In my gear setup, M43 is one “assistant” cam and my 1st desire is compactness. In fact, my only complaint to GX1 is the lack of manual video exposure. Other than that, everything is fine for me.
I sincerely hope EM5 will bring down GX1′s price.

Also the big fail with the NEX 7 is the size of the lenses as Sony have made no attempt to make them balance well with the camera. They just come across as a complete afterthought. There is more to the handling of a camera than just the body itself and that is what Sony don’t seem to get with the NEX series.

2 years ago |Would I be right in thinking sometimes like myself you put the winder on your OM-4 to use as a grip with a long lens but don’t even turn the winder on and just use manual advance? This is what makes the OM-D look very usable, the option to have a small camera, or a camera with a grip or add the battery pack as well. You can tailor the camera size for the job your doing just like you could with the original OM series with the winder and motor drive options. If this camera handles as well as the original OM it will mean you can use slower shutter speeds without having to even use the IS which always effects the quality in a small or large way.
At the moment we have small DSLRs on the market that don’t handle anywhere as well as as the original OM series and then we have the larger pro DSLRs. I have lost count of the amount of files I have been asked to professionally retouch from say the 5D MKII where a large amount of the shoot display camera shake because the photographer has used 1/30 or 1/60 or even 1/125 but can’t hold the camera still enough because it ways too much. Canon and Nikon seem to be making no attempt to reduce these cameras in size at present probably as it cost lots of development money. Now these cameras might have a low noise at high ISO advantage but if you shooting in quite poor light hand held you end up having to use a shutter speed quite often two stops faster to reduce the risk of camera shake if you have a lens with no IS. At that point your eating into your low noise advantage.
Based on these current photos it looks like Olympus have thought this design out well but it is going to come down to how good or bad that viewfinder really is.
What I would really love to see is a real photo with the Olympus OM-D series and say a OM-4 next to each other and back to back so you can compare the two. If the OM-D has more or less the same footprint that would be great as it will mean the handling should be good.

Weather proof adapter: 150 to 200 euro’s?
Package price estimation: 1600-1700 euro’s (at least)
More expensive than E5.
Admin: please ask your sources if this cam will focus regular 4/3rds glass. It would justify the high price for the package to drive superb 4/3rds glass. If not, then very, very expensive.

Pretty modular: you can easily change its bulk to accommodate different shooting styles and purposes. A camera that should last for many years.

You can say that for other cameras too, like D300s vs D7000 vs D5100. Then there’s the NEX-C3, which has (essentially) same sensor as the 5N, D7000 and K5 but cheaper; it will beat a bunch of cameras costing more based on IQ alone. But…
IQ is not the ultimate criterion in cameras!

2 years ago |What makes you think this is Olympus’ idea of retro? And there are so many crazy comments, like a mirror in the camera. EVERYONE knows m4/3 is too small for a mirror in the area behind the lens. And one of the early comments about the viewfinder hump being ‘agressive’ and asking for it to be less pointy… You kidding?!
And I can’t believe all of the negative comments re the viewfinder ‘hump’ on top of the camera? Where do you think Olympus can put the viewfinder in such a small body? Maybe they could do it ala Nex-7, but all of you Rangefinder wannabe’s should get a life! I find the viewfinder in the middle of the body more balanced than on the end of the body, and yes I have used and loved using rangefinders.
So many limp wristed un-informed comments on this page! I’m glad most of you aren’t camera designers… If you all want a tiny camera, Olympus already has a GREAT camera called the PEN for you! Check it out! As far as I’m concerned the PEN’s are too small, and fidgety to do any serious control of functions – I love them but they are tiny.
I wonder how many of you have held an Olympus OM-1, OM-2 or OM-4? They really were at the pinnacle of elegant, professional, usable compact SLR design, refined over many many years! Olympus has alot of experience in industrial design, and creating highly usable cameras. If only this new camera was the same size as the OM models, it would be perfect.
We don’t know anything about the quality of the images, and the quality, build and feel of the camera, how it sits in your hands, so we should refrain judgement, and some of these un-informed comments are really hysterical.
This camera is meant to be a more serious photographic tool… we should be more concerned about not having more buttons on the body to directly control ISO, white balance, AF etc, and having a PC sync socket for flash and triggers, etc, but I’m sure Olympus have thought about the user interface and the target market – lets see what it’s like before you all make negative comments.

Thinking along the lines of #2, I wonder if the battery pack would be necessary to drive 43 lenses? I have no idea if 43 glass requires special motors, I thought it was just the PDAF problem, but if you’re right about motors, maybe the battery pack is necessary for 43 glass.
I hope we get 43 glass without any strings (extra batteries required) attached, but strings attached would be OK if necessary to bridge the two systems (43 & MFT). The 43 glass is well worth a little inconvenience sometimes.

A scanning back on a 4×5 camera would give vastly better IQ than anything we talk about on this forum, but for most uses would have no PQ at all because nobody wants to drag one around! A phone camera may not have very good IQ, but may produce very good PQ just because it’s easy to carry and unobtrusive to use. We all choose where we want to be between these two extremes.

Anyway, I think this will be my perfect camera for me. Like the way when I said before buying my ep3. Seems I’m a little too greedy. Exciting times as always

2 years ago |As for the pentaprism hump, I believe that form should follow function for the most part. If the OM-D has an electronic viewfinder, as has been suggested, then it should have been designed around that requirement. Giving it a hump that looks as if it was made for a pentaprism is backwards and just plain goofy! Efficient design generally looks good because it looks right. Olympus has a history of efficient design which leads me to wonder about the actual configuration of the product.

2 years ago |I was also looking for the flash switch and couldn’t see one. Maybe that greyish part on the right side just under the hotshoe? Or it could be on the left side of the EVF, since we can’t see that in the rear view.
The switch for the LCD/EVF looks like it’s on the right hand side of the EVF, facing towards the right. You can see the little white square there… The diopter could be just above it? (very small wheel?).
I would like it if the giant hump was removable (take off the pop-up flash, hot-shoe and just leave an accessory port?). But there would have to be another ‘Olympus’ label underneath…
All-in-all, I like the OM-D though. Looks like it means business.

2 years ago |It looks cool; certainly reminiscent of the original OM cameras (which is good!), but the real litmus test will be image quality. If the new sensor provides dynamic range and definition as good as, or better than, its competitors then it should be quite successful. The Hump is big because the camera is tiny – it may have to pop vertically a bit to raise the flash clear. The accessory port under the accessory mount adds still further height. Think higher VF2 on E-PL3. Although one hopes there might be a surprise under there as well.

2 years ago |Archer Sully, I agree totally with you.
In the old days f2.8 was the line between fast and normal that went to about f5.6 and higher was slow. Most normal and 3rd party lenses were f2.0 to f4 many being around f3.5 There was a reason, faster than f2.0 was expensive, faster that $1.8 was prohibitive. While today’s spending power exceeds that of past times, the fact remains, lenses must be sold, if they cost to much they will not sell.
We see on this forum that there is no consensus over what should be offered as a lens, some want longer, some shorter, some faster, some smaller, some manual, some auto and on it goes. So the maker supplies a ‘normal’ kit lens. (Most users never go any further) and then makes a range of lenses to fit different markets and budgets. Oly make 3 grades of lens available for 4/3. The super high grade is very expensive and no matter how much some others want them as a standard kit lens it will simply not happen.
As you said “Its just a trade-off is all”.

1. If there’s popup flash, where’s flash popup button/switch ?
2. Where’s LCD/EVF switching button ? You can’t rely on only eye sensor.
If we need to program this function to one of Fn button then it’s very poor design.
(There’s something on the right side of VF which should be diopter adjust knob)
3. One Million dollars question, what is in the hump ???
It’s too big for just VF + popup flash, and EVF don’t need prism or mirror. Oh…wait…

Funny thing is, if its over priced, it will not sell. I think marketing people know this. They have a way round it, called, re-education through advertising. This is proof that it was over priced in the first place but marketing is unwilling to admit they got it wrong. If there is big advertising beyond the normal introduction phase, then yes you were right.

Very interesting, 4 years old, and if his speed of movement is true (I believe it is) then the gap is closer.
Another interesting statement is made here regarding prints. Who here on this forum prints larger than 13 x 19″ often enough to justify the cost of a medium format (digital)? With the improvements made by all major camera makers it would be almost impossible to pick one print from another at 13 x 19″. Some pixel peeping may show differences but only nuts look at merging dots, there is no art or wow in pixels.

2 years ago |Measured the inside of the metal connector of the hot shoe, 65 pixels for the G3, 61 for the E-M5. Which should be about right considering the E-M5 is at an angle which will make the front width of the connector shorter than when straight on like with the G3. Again, this isn’t anything exact, but a rough idea.

It’s not surprising that it bothers you even if you haven’t articulated why that is. Good design is largely about proportions and even subtle changes in proportion make designs degrade quickly.
An example: the Mini Clubman is much uglier than the regular Mini even when the design is much the same – the proportions have changed though, and there you are…

2 years ago |Thanks, Mark! Even though there’s a Micro FourThirds version of the 25mm Summilux, the FourThirds version is still better. M43 lenses just have more compromises in order to project light on the sensor with a shorter flange distance. So I guess if they come up with a FourThirds version of the Zuiko 12mm f/2, it would be sharper than the Micro FourThirds version.
Sadly, I don’t think the Lumix X lenses will be able to win against their 43 Zuiko counterparts.
RW
2 years ago |I dunno, Mark. There is a clear cutoff point in my mind size-wise. As soon as your camera body and attached lens don’t fit nicely in a pocket (and I’m not talking about bulging out of a large jacket pocket here), you are into camera bag territory.
A small camera bag is better than a large one, but when we get to the realm of talking relative camera bag sizes, the tradeoff against IQ (read larger sensor) becomes less clear cut to me.
To my non-expert eye, the EM-5 is starting to look quite like an EP3 with a VF-2 permanently nailed to the top of it. I am one of those guys that have been asking for an internal viewfinder from Day 1 – but I kind of had something in mind that was more “internal”.
A miniature Nikon D4 was not what I had in mind. Your mileage may vary.

2 years ago |Well not everybody shoots sports. When I bought the E-P2, I knew it wasn’t a fast focusing camera, and usually it forces me to slow down and compose the shot. Also, the 14-54mm mark 2 is optimized for CD-AF focusing, so it should focus reasonably fast. Yeah, it would be nice if the SWD lenses focus as fast as on the E-5, but I wouldn’t hold my breath.
Archer Sully
2 years ago |I don’t think that f/2 and f/1.8 are too slow. The kit zoom is another matter, but there are lots of circumstances where that sort of speed is fine. Its just a trade-off is all.
Michael Meissner
2 years ago |Grips make it easier to hold cameras with heavier lens and flashes mounted. Some people find a camera with a deeper grip easier to hold, some prefer a thinner camera (think E-P3 vs. E-PM1).
If you mean the bottom battery compartment, as opposed to the side grip, it offers three advantages. The first is that it typically takes 2 batteries, so you can shoot twice as long before changing batteries. The second is it changes the position of the battery door from underneath the camera, to the back, so that you can change batteries when the camera is mounted on a tripod/monopod/etc. without taking the camera off its mount. The third option is the second shutter buttons, control wheel, and other buttons on the bottom of the camera, which is convenient when you are shooting in portrait orientation a lot.
While I dislike grips for handheld shooting, I did buy the HLD-4 for my steampunk setup, so I could get a longer runtime, and be able to change the batteries without tipping the gear over. After using it, I discovered that the bottom shutter release was also handy, after I broke some of the RM-CB1 cables (my icon picture shows an earlier version of the camera).
david

.
Now, of course, I can’t get the lenses I want on Sony: the only wide angle is the decidedly non-stellar 16/2.8. For moderate wide there’s the stellar 24/1.8, which is even more expensive than the Olympus 12/2, while only offering a 1/3 stop more light.
In the end, as nice as the Sony sensor is, there’s no system there.
Russ
2 years ago |Designers have to build cameras with an eye to the future rather than be locked into the past. And I do make purchases based on what might be available. I want to invest in a system that is forward looking, and I really don’t care about the cosmetics. Many here seem more concerned with how a camera looks than with how the pictures that the camera takes look. I want to take pictures. If this is the best camera for me, I’m going to buy it and never lose a minutes sleep about the pseudo-penta prism.

2 years ago |Just putting something out there (a remote possibility at best).
What if the truncated ovoid part at the front of the camera, and just behind the lens, could be a four thirds adapter, with some sort of focus assistance built in.
Now, if the hump was also removable, OM-D could stand for Olympus Modular Digital.
Unlikely in a small camera body, I know…

2 years ago |No, I don’t think you understand the mindset of the people Olympus is trying to appeal to. Many DSLR users feel the battery grip and portrait grips are important (particularly those shooting with higher end bodies). While I only use my HLD-4 when I’m shooting with my E-5 inside of its steampunk bellows setup, most of the people shooting with E-5′s, E-3′s, etc. use the portrait grip. Fortunately unlike the high end Nikon and Canon bodies, you can remove the battery grip for a smaller profile camera.

Remember the Canon 1Ds mk2?
It was one of THE über-pro SUPER much used PRO DSLR. Used for EVERYTHING including ads and modelling jobs and what not. And it is still in use today. Everybody seemed to think that the quality was perfect and more than enough.
Truth is… the G3/GX1 sensor pretty much has the same quality. Slightly less DR, but also less noise and higher sharpness/more details in general.
Yes… there are now EVEN BETTER cameras/sensors on the market.
But if one camera is STILL used professionally and held in high regard… and another one is of the SAME quality, how then can this then NOT be enough quality?
If the quality is enough for real pros… it sure is enough for me.

People still think this camera is big and has a huge hump. It’s not – it’s basically the same size as the E-P3 and the “horrible” hump is roughly 2 cm tall. It may look big, but it really isn’t. The camera is very, very, very small. It will fit in the palm of a child’s hand.
safaridon
2 years ago |I think the chrome version looks a lot better simply because the contrast with black body parts help to break up the height of the hump to make it less objectionable. Based on pictures previously released of the above I believe the hotshoe and box under it are removeable in order to use the pop up flash hidden under the bonnet. I think I like this version if the IBIS has been improved to work well at all speeds and if the E-D5 is able to track fast moving objects much faster.
Mark
2 years ago |time will tell, hump could be the pop up flash, could be that the EVF display is bigger than the viewfinder port. I’ll take a large EVF + nice flash (and prefer it’s bounce-able), all that’s more important than any hump issues. If you look at the link to the polish image, the body thing really is teeny.

Don’t get me wrong, you can always have a professional photographs just by using p&s cameras, but should you have used a better camera on that moment with the same objects, it could’ve been better. Much better. That if you are looking for perfection day by day on your work.
Sorry to offend you or other people here, but I never think m43 was created for professional photography though it can mimic the functionality. It’s more for walkaround/travelling cameras, for its ‘p&s’ size with better quality. But, putting a pro name, battery grip, and other pro technology and features with micro sensor and priced the camera with premium price, is simply overkill.

2 years ago |Not necessarily (on 4/3rds glass). The grip makes sense if this camera is to be used in a professional capacity – namely battery life, and better “hold” ergonomics.
Alan
2 years ago |I haven’t used this camera (obviously) but I own E3, E5, EPL-2 and used an EP1 and EP2. The dynamic range is poor and it is obvious in images. Not a problem if you live somewhere where it is cloudy all the time, but a HUGE problem if you live somewhere where there is a clear, harsh sun beating down all the time.
Furthermore, the noise in the ISO200 images of the E5 and EPL2 is visible when printed large (the E3 at ISO100 has essentially none). These are technical issues that limit the use of photos taken by these cameras and it is very reasonable that people expect Olympus to do something about them. Olympus’ original justification of the 4/3 sensor size included the claim that sensor technology would rapidly improve, until the limiting factor would be optics (which they used to try to optimize). They were right, but they chose not to use the best of the improved sensors.
Raist

2 years ago |I’m not thrilled about the massive hump; to me a brick shape (with necessary grip) is more usable in the sense of (1) less problems with getting hooked in other gear/clothes/etc., and (2) looks more anonymous for street photography, etc. The idea of having a hump just for nostalgic reasons is pure insanity, in my view. I do expect Olympus designers to be sane people, and thus do expect a good reason for the size of the hump (as opposed to the NEX-7), and I do expect the hump to be solid and able to endure some bumps, etc.
So — I look forward to see the released camera and study the specs/read the reviews.

Third possibility: Hides an accessory-port for all additional modules – for example GPS-module, communication tools, MAL-1 Makro Arm Light, SEMA-1, PENPAL PP-1 and so on.

2 years ago |It is quite amateur of Olympus to release the image of the EM-5 in its most massive form. I wish they would have released full images of the body sans grips. The grips are cool, and definitely something not available OEM from Panasonic, or any mirrorless camera maker for that matter, but wouldn’t common sense tell Olympus to release images that make the camera look small? I consider it one of the many gaffes that Olympus is guilty of. And yes we don’t know if the images are real, but presumably, Olympus has released everyone of these images.

I love all the zealous GH2 owners who are trying to vehemently defend their camera as still being the best m4/3 camera out there. Sorry, but you should have realized that a new/better camera would eventually be released. Also, don’t worry, the GH2 will still be a great camera after the E-M5 is released.

2 years ago |I hope the performance and features of this camera kicks ass and I don’t have any beef with a larger m43 form factor camera (I owned a GH1 and own a GH2), but why is the hump in the middle so tall? 2 years ago |Okay, after seeing the dpreview leak pix, I think I’ve figured out the “hump” thing. We know the new EVF has the same basic specs as the VF-2, which is housed in a rectangular “breadbox.” The leaked pix show a basic body that looks to be not much larger than a Pen.
So it’s easy to follow the designers’ thought process: “Okay, we need to make the body just a bit bigger than the Pen to fit in the weather seals, the 5-axis stabilizer, etc. Now, all we need to do is graft the VF-2 onto the top… oh, wait, that’s kind of ugly. How about if we slope the sides in just a bit so it doesn’t look so bulky…?”
Petter J.
2 years ago |I wouldn’t expect this to touch the Nex 7 IQ. The difference between the top performing m43 sensors and this 24mpx Sony sensor is just too large. Unless Oympus has a brand new, much better performing sensor, it’s image quality will not be indistinguishable to the Nex 7.
http://bit.ly/AypPnW
However, I’m sure it will be good, but the Nex 7 has one of the best APS-C sensors in the industry (there are better sensors for high ISO shooting though, but it’s still a decent performer).

2 years ago |“Now, you all are fawning over another DSLR form factor m43 when the GH2 already exist, all for $1200. Gullible.”
I don’t think I’m being gullible. I own a GH2. It’s great. I use it a lot and I’m very satisfied with its handling, performance, and the quality of the pictures (and video) I get with it.
But there have been many times I wished that it had in-body stabilization and wireless TTL flash. I don’t think Panasonic ever will offer either of those features — they’re committed to in-lens stabilization, and I suspect they can’t get the rights to use the patents covering wireless TTL. Previous Olympus models have offered those features, but they didn’t have an EVF, which is a must-have for me.
So, the EM-5 is a camera with an EVF and with overall layout and controls similar to the GH2, plus the flash and stabilization features of other Olympus models. And (unlike the NEXies or the new “it camera” from Fuji) it will work with the lenses I already own.
Basically that’s exactly what I had wanted, so I suppose I really ought to buy one!… although I would also keep the GH2, of course…

2 years ago |I’m personally not okay with the hump, particularly considering that the EVF is actually located LOWER than the hump, so it’s safe to assume that Oly is capable of doing a flush or even slightly elevated top plate and built in an evf in there. You can easily see what a compact evf equipped PEN could look like if you cover the hump and leave the EVF in place, it’s not much more volume.

Btw, I don’t agree that the original OMs were all function. Olympus made the OMs really small, but clearly sacrificed some fuctionality to achieve that goal. The OMs were pretty good, but not at the same level as the best Canons and Nikons at the time.

2 years ago |“I can’t help it, the lens is photoshopped.”
Well, at least the front part of it is. For anyone who ever has worked in a marketing department, it’s easy to guess why. They made a photo of the camera with the lens mounted, but then some marketing person said, “We can’t use this; the front element of the lens doesn’t have pretty highlights and reflections on it.” (These are difficult to achieve; the lens usually has to be lighted separately.)
There was no time to re-do the photo, so some unfortunate graphics person was assigned to take an existing photo of another camera, and graft the front part of the lens (complete with pretty highlights and reflections) onto their new photo of the camera body and rear lens section. Unfortunately, the two photos had not been taken from exactly the same angle, so the perspectives didn’t match perfectly. The Photoshop artist probably was given only a short time to do it — “I need it before lunch so I can show my boss in our meeting this afternoon” — and in any case it’s very difficult to apply perspective distortion to circles without having them look unnatural.
So that’s how we wound up with a photo in which the lens looks as if it was kinked in the middle, where the two photos were blended together.
Ulli
2 years ago |sorry but the difference in quality isn’t that big, because its only vivable if you watch the files 1:1 on your monitor because you sit so close on it. shrink any file from various various dslr formats to screenformat and you wont see any difference, except maybe for a subtle variation in DR. This is the same as printing the large files in wall format. you take a proper distance for view those wall prints and you or any expert can’t see which is better. Yes, It has some less DR and a little bit moré noise, but It does’t preclude to get excellent images, in many cases better than the competition, and with less MP.

Only reason I can think of to not put the delete button over on the left side, and replace it with a another fn(or ISO, or DOF or…) on the right, would be looks(form).

2 years ago |If you look at the power switch location of the GH2, you know where it should be. In order to save battery, it is better to switch a m4/3 camera, which usually has low battery life, off. Therefore the battery switch should be easily reached, which is not the case here. Such switches are usually designed in a way that you don’t change their position accidentally.
The Canon positions of on/off switches are in the wrong position as well. Nikon does a better job in this respect.

The Gh2 looks much more attractive than this clunky, boxy camera. $1200 for a m43 without the lens? So hypocritical! The indignant comments about the X100 costing $1200 (with lens) or the Nex-7 for the same price. Now, you all are fawning over another DSLR form factor m43 when the GH2 already exist, all for $1200. Gullible. Marketers love you guys.

2 years ago |I think this will be my next cam. Even if the price is a little high, I hope most of my wishes come true:
bigger battery : seems to be possible without a bigger grip
better handling with bigger grip: possible
the overall design seems to be very nobel
the lcd is tiltable
perhaps the EVF is tiltable, and I hope for a little better EVF than the VF2…
and: I hope and think it will be a cam with a “soul”, an item which you like to take in your hand to shoot photos ( that´s perhaps the most difficult thing to design .. ), and then I don´t care if the body costs 300-500.- € more than an other body with perhaps better specs but without this “soul”..
The sensor: I´m happy with the sensor in my GH2, all photos I want to shoot can be done with this one;
if the sensor is as good as in the GH2, it`s perfect for me….

A tweaked GX1/G3 sensor will be a big improvement over Olys old one.The size of this body is the same as an EP-3, plus the hump.Very small. Not pocketable? Why would I want to try and shove it into a pocket? The price,at $1200, is $500 cheaper than the new Fuji.We all have lenses, both native and legacy, that will snap onto this body. The Fuji requires a whole new investment in lenses at $600 a piece.
For me, the question is,what will I get here that I don’t already have with my Panasonic G3,other than a more attractive body.

2 years ago |I think this camera may be more of a bridge camera than an E-5 replacement. It may be the first camera that is as small as an MFT camera but as performant as the E-5. As such, it could do well in a coat pocket (MFT glass) and in pro sessions (43 glass). It may truly bridge the gap.
But I think we may be getting a little ahead of ourselves until we find out for sure that it fully supports PDAF for 43 glass. (Fingers crossed.)

2 years ago |Yeah, people who are complaining about size really don’t get it. The target audience for a camera like this is for photographers who will be using high quality glass. Those lenses also kill the ability to tuck it away in a pocket.
All that I care about beyond the features that seem to be part of the EM-5 is how fast it will focus SWD glass. Weatherproofing and PDAF are what will seal the deal for me.

It swings open like on an e-620.

2 years ago |True pro DSLR’s are $5k and up (D3s, 1DsIV). Semi-pro (D300s, 7D) are $1.3-2.0k. At $1.1k, this is a bit lower, but I expect the build quality and size to make it the new standard for “adventure” cams, for people like me who like to abuse their bodies in the name of getting the shot.
Honestly, if the metering is good (and I expect it will be), then the IQ will be nearly indistinguishable from a NEX 7 in most (not all!) circumstances. 2 years ago |The idea of mirrorless is not just about being small (although micro is)!
Mirrorless is also about the elimination of complex PDAF mechanics, replaced w/ the more accurate CDAF, and at the same time eliminate the costly and often dim penta prisms. It’s about having no obstructions in the light path, a shorter flange-back distance allowing for more compact lens designs, i.e. non-retrofocal UWAs, it’s about a big EVF view, as opposed to a small tunnel-like OVF, a smooth Live View operation, higher FPS etc etc…
Moreover, to be handled as a pro cam with some pro-grade bright lenses attached, it does need some heft and size, to provide the grip and balance needed for that. If your only priority is itsy bitsy tiny, go buy an E-PM1 or G3. Or an even smaller one, which are also out there in abundance.

2 years ago |The blurb on the advertising copy released a day or so ago by Olympus was all about Art filters, so it´s going to have them big time.
Which makes sense, as Olympus is heavily into getting the most out of the sensor by software (read jpeg), so they would want to provide software filters that would also handle the sensor´s output to the max.
Other companies expect you to do it in Raw, which I do, I guess it´s just a different philosophy.

Because with out the grip the ergonomics of the Olympus m43 line were designed for midgets. Some of us like to also have control and balance of our gear and not play finger yoga. Besides who is forcing you to buy the grip? If you don’t like it don’t buy it but it gives those who find m43 too small a change for some relief.

For the comment about pocket ability…do you really think a “pro” camera would fit in anyone’s pocket? If you need that buy an e-pm1 or even better a compact like an xz-1. People need to get real! Eight years old KonicaMinolta A2 is more like what basic design of modern legacy free mirrorless high end body should be. Along with other style of menu free controls instead of high end DSLR standard of separate buttons for activating settings to be changed.

2 years ago |Several interesting things.
- it looks really big until you look at the link to the polish website and see how teeny it really is. Glad they have the grip, otherwise it looks hard to hold for anyone with big hands.
- There seem to be two release buttons on dials on the top front of the camera, the front one must be part of the grip since that part of the camera isn’t in the previous AD photo.
- Clearly there is something a bit fake, look at the multiple lock dials on the back, where the grip attaches. Unless the grip is in multiple pieces, if you look at the polish photo, the camera doesn’t extend that far below the base of the lens, so there is something going on with the grip.
- The prism hump seems odd since the VF is fairly low. Is the pop up flash in there?

2 years ago |I like the camera. It looks nice and probably it has the most used features I like. But… the price is very important and I find that comparing with DSRL, the cameras that EVIL try to pull out, it is expensive.
In Europe you can find a Nikon D7000 for 925 euros and a Canon 600D for 600 euros; E-M5 will cost 1.100 euros.
In terms of image quality Canon and Nikon are much better, so… this mean that if I buy the Oly camera I will be paying much more… for less quality¡¡¡. For me the only advantage over the competition is the size -and to be weather sealed-, so I find the price too expensive. So here comes the question: How much do you think should be a reasonable price?
Regarding to the sensor, the camera could cost about 500 euros and if you want to add a plus for the size this could be… 150 euros. After you can add for weather sealed 200 euros. So I think that a right price should be 850 euros.
1.100 euros is too expensive for this camera.

These renderings with the battery and grip add-on make it look massive. I’m still not completely convinced that these are actual pictures, I believe they are high quality 3D renderings of what it’s supposed to look like, and the front image is an obvious Photoshop.

I’m pretty sure the rumor stated that a flash was included. Whether that’s inside the body or as a separate accessory in the box remains to be seen. And, of course, it’s only a rumour.
My money is on no flash, no tiltable EVF. Just some extra space to be able to fit the accessory port.

2 years ago |All of Olympus DSLRs except for the E-1 have a pop-up flash. Starting with the E-420/E-520 generation, the pop-up flash can also control the remote flashes (FL-36R, FL-50R, FL-300R, plus the Metz and Cactus flashes).
The E-300 and E-330 had no hump on the top, and you could use the camera with both the pop-up flash and a FL-36 (and the camera had different controls for both). In all of the other cameras, it was an either or situation, though I’ve never tried to put a stripped down flash cable to see if you could use the hot-shoe and pop-up flash at the same time, even though there was no menu option for controlling the power of ea.
The E-1, E-3, E-30, and E-5 all have an additional pc-sync connector on the left side. The pc-sync connection fires in all modes.
I don’t recall that any of the DSLRs’ pop-up flash could be angled for a weak ceiling bounce, like it could with the Panasonic L1/L10 DSLRs and E-PL1/E-PL2.
In terms of add-ons using the accessory port, obviously the VF-2 and VF-3 EVF’s would not be needed, but depending on whether they have a microphone connector, you might want the SEMA-1 for external microphone. The MAL-1 macro lights would also be interesting. Somebody out in the world probably wants to use the Penpal bluetooth attachment.

2 years ago |Finally, Olympus !! Finally you got it. No PEN design, no f…ing, awkward, flimsy multicontroller. It seems that the view finder has an eye sensor, bravo.
However, generally, the body design of the GH2 still has the edge in ergonomics. The on/off switch is definitely in the wrong position. It belongs where one’s index finger naturally sits. I also don’t see switches for AF-Mode, measuring characteristics and so on.
To judge, what is better in hand, GH2 or OM-D, clearly we need to compare both cameras physically in hand.
Well done, Olympus. In the future, please, more of this, and much less PEN stuff.

2 years ago |I like the idea of the compact cam with transformer grip + battery bottom. However, it looks like the grip is required before you can put on the battery bottom. Does the grip have battery too, or will they be sold together? I’m not sure I’ll go for the grip + bottom, unless battery life necessitates it.
I also look forward to learning what the transformer top (hump) can do, and have my fingers crossed for great IQ. Actually, I have little doubt the IQ will be strong, but do hope for a pleasant surprise in the high ISO performance department.
Finally, with the (E-5 style E-M5 name, the heavy lens grips, and the pro fixings, I am really optimistic that E-M5 will return Oly’s 43 glass to top-flight AF performance.
Bottom line: a versatile camera like the E-M5 + great glass will rock.
I believe the E-M5 will be my first Olympus camera body (plenty of Oly FT + MFT glass already

2 years ago |Not in the least. Everything about this camera is screaming “Pro!” Look at the power switch (not a button): that’s the type of switch and location you find on the E-5, not to mention the pro Canons. Battery grips are an essential accessory if you want to shoot all day, and the grip is there to make shooting in portrait orientation more comfortable.

2 years ago |Finally we get to see the real thing after all the hype! Strange how the straight angular lines fed piecemeal to us now have been transformed into an EVF dome that looks more like an space age helmet or the dome at a nucleur facility. In reality to me it is simply Oly’s attempt to disguise the bulky housing of the existing VF2. In other words the E-D5 is more a collection of mainly existing body parts housed in a new body (with some new features like hoped for improved IBIS) which other than the EVF bulge looks very good to me. We should not be surprised of this approach given how quickly this model was produced with limited financial resources by Oly. I only hope that Pany in their new models incorporates the technology used in the small OLED high rez EVFs like that in NEX7 or Fuji XPro1. Looks more like a replacement for the E3 to me.

But looking at the front pics i notice some photoshop make up just around the lens. The frontiere between the lens and the body, the mount, seems to me a little fake. A sort of montage of a pics of the body and a pics of the lens. I dont know why ?
may be it is just because the two part have been taken separatly.
or maybe the mount is a little different from that pics.
may be a bit special for a certain purpose … or not.
I m just guessing beacause of that photoshop make up.

2 years ago |It depends on what’s going on with it, and what the rest of the camera looks like.
The problem I’ve always had with the G and GH cameras from an aesthetic viewpoint has been the fakeness of them: the fake hump, the fake grip, the overall look of being Canons that were dried at the wrong temperature and shrank. All neither here nor there, as the cameras lacked features I want, and I lacked funds to purchase
.
I still don’t know how I feel about the looks of this camera, in terms of looks, as a photo can’t convey the hand feel of the device.

2 years ago |Don’t get me wrong…I love the MFT format, cameras and lenses…I use them in conjunction with a FF DSLR system. I think that this Olympus camera is really cool looking and well built. I have a G3/GX1 cameras now. The highlights still get blown out in many lighting situations. (It’s just a fact). They do not on my 5D Mark II. Eventually the MFT sensor will get enough tech to accomplish this, too. It is just silly to spend this kind of money for a fabulous mechanical item based on the G3 sensor. A G3 camera is less than a third the price of the body setup at the top of the page…The raw images will look the same from both cameras. So the thought of purchasing this camera, in this price range is amusing, to me.

You don’t need to use it if you don’t like it.
But many don’t want to carry an external flash all the time, and also don’t want to loose shooting opportunities that need some kind of flash, because one has to first dig out and install that external flash, and after that the motive is gone.

2 years ago |D4 and 1DX buyers won’t be cross-shopping this camera. Olympus can call it “pro” but the sensor (it’s rumored to have) doesn’t support the claim.
Fact is, $1000-ish for the body is still firmly in the consumer price range, and consumers want a built-in flash. Olympus learned this already and added one to the E-P3. Sony, too, and the NEX-7 is their most in-demand model. No flash on the OM-D is a mistake.

2 years ago |What is a “faux rangefinder” design? In my view, the natural shape is the (slightly rounded) brick shape, with as few humps as possible to avoid the camera getting entangled/stuck in something. — but at the same time giving as nice a grip s possible. Also, I prefer an EVF. If this is what is meant by “faux rangefinder”, then the whole idea of “faux rangefinder” is an utterly absurd one. A “faux dslr” however, is stupid at the outset *unles the hump has a function*. If the only function is to feed nostalgia, then it is simply stupid. Sorry to be blunt, but that’s it.

Would my GH1 body die, *knocks on wood*, I would buy the G3 or the GX1 … not only the price, but that ‘hump’ would prevent the camera from fitting my bags: the GH1, more the 14-140mm, 20mm and Raynox DCR-250 filter fit in a bridge sized bag (and all together cost less than this E-M5 giant).
If it had a new sensor that would me think twice… right now m43 sensors are really outdated, I hope GH3 comes with something really new.

2 years ago |The OM system had different options for film advance. The 3fps winder was one piece, but the motor drives (1 and 2) had separate motors and battery packs. This design mimics those. But why would you need two separate add-ons for just a battery grip? Maybe the module in the middle does something else, like Bluetooth or wi-fi.
Re the marks next to the shoe on top, remember that OMs for a long time did not include a shoe. This looks as if there are different shoe options, as was suggested. Maybe this is where the Bluetooth or wi-fi is.
I’ve said it before and I’ll say it again, I’ll cancel my NEX-7 order it this camera has decent specs and ships on time. Olympus already has a superior lens selection compared to the NEX series.

2 years ago |Not sure to agree. The faux-rangefinder-look of the DSLR area (Olympus e-330, Panasonic L-1) never succeeded, partly because the constraints of the optical viewfinder were that strong that it resulted in being too tiny. But with an electronic viewfinder, they were entirely free to bring something new but eventually essentially brought a mini-E3/E5. Still, I may be interested in the camera but their designers are not currently as performing as they used to be.

I feel they are little bit distorted. (compressed horizontally slightly).
The rear side of EVF hump has a funny block. I suspect it as a certain connector cover or something. That means it is removal.
Current E-P series has a special port right back of the hot shoe. Basically it’s for EVF. but now it’s for Bluetooth funny transmitter, too. Is the block for the cover of current E-P series port?
if so, I don’t need it… just for BT transmitter. I don’t think the port has the future. And OM-D has a some connector at the bottom of the body as we see the external battery block. The external battery has two Fn keys, so it provide not only DC power, but also communicate in some protocol. The future is on that connector.
BTW, what is it on the right of the external battery with rotary knob? It looks two knobs in from and back (or same knob?)
om-4
2 years ago |From observing the pics I guess the grip is made to look like the motordrive 2, that came in two parts.
What this means is you can attach and detach the grip without opening the batterydoor and by adding the extra battery part at the bottom you’d get 3 sets of batteries unless the bottompart only hold one.
One concern about tripod mounting. Does it have a second screwmount centered under the lens? The bottom of the E-M5 must look like Swiss cheese. On the left screwmount for grip on the right side I think they have to make a hole to hook the right side of the grip. Otherwise when in vertical I foresee the body to sway left from the grip. Potential loss of communication between the 14 contactpoints on the grip (HLD-4 has 14 contacts)when the body seperates from grip. Same story when attaching bottom grip.
When holding on the bottomgrip in vertical with 50-200mm and maybe FL50 attached you have a lot of weight pulling to the left.
ONN/OFF switch is oriented like E-3/5 (flip up), opposite to E-30 (on is flip down)
Where did the AE/AFL button go? must program one of the FN button for sure. Hope the REC button is programmable too when not in filmmode (manual magnification, oh yeah).

2 years ago |Very nice design! There are few buttons which makes me fear that you have to dig into menues very often. I do not like the click-intensive interface of the E-P1. (always selecting for different info in the live view for instance – really crap!) The GF1 and G3: Set up the info you want and that’s it – no problem at all.
If this camera has that user interface it is a show stopper for me. When I do photography the camera must not hamper the creative process. Some people who constantly click their electronic toys may like the E-P1 UI but I tried it for two years and came to the conlclusion it was crap.
Really hope that Oly takes another UI path with this camera.

Not necessarily, there could be a button on either side of the hump or it could be raised manually. The front cover of the hump looks like it could be separated from the rest in some way.

I’m also curious for the new flash: A mFT sized macro flash would be nice… But I guess it would be too much to ask for a weathersealed one. As there is no underwater housing for the macro flashes.

2 years ago |Some minor nits of personal preferences. I would have preferred the E-620, E-3, E-5 style of strap connector where you can feed a standard 3/8″ strap directly through, instead of having the little eye that you attach a d-ring which you attach a strap to. From the picture, it reminds me of the E-410 which I found hard to hold in the store, but I do find the E-P2′s placement to be not as bothersome in practice.
I’m not wild about skin of the camera, but I assume if I get the E-M5, that I will eventually get a Aka-asah leather 1/2 case like I did for the E-P2.
The LCD looks like it isn’t a true articulating LCD (like the E-5), but instead just allows movement in one direction (like the E-PL3). It would have been nice if had offered more articulation.
I wonder why there are two locking switches for the battery grip. Previous Olympus camera only had one (on the battery grip).
Speaking of the battery grip, I assume it is like the E-620 and takes 2 BLS-5 batteries, and not BLM-5 batteries.
I assume under the hot-shoe is the accessory port.
I assume the camera is sort E-620ish in size rather than E-5ish. I do wonder how it will handle holding bigger glass like the 50-200mm. I’ve seen people shooting with the 50-200mm on E-P2s and the like, but it always seems like it is unwieldy. While I find the E-x and 50-200mm to be better balanced.

2 years ago |Impressed! But I’m not seeing evidence for a built-in flash; I do see evidence of a port cover below the hot shoe. Notice the grip nobs on the protrusion below the hot shoe from the rear. They are the similar to those on the port cover for the VF-2. A port makes sense to support advanced electronics such as GPS, external flash options, and even perhaps the VF-2 to allow waist-level viewing.
In any case, the E-M5 is a technological tour de force if the specs hold true. Settled … I’m selling my Nikon DSLR system and will own an E-M5 by Christmas! To think that the same native MFT lenses will work on everything from the diminutive PL3/PM1 as a P&S form factor all the way up the the E-M5. Later … I’m out for a “photo day” with two P2s, five lenses, a light meter, and accessories in a bag that weights only 5.5 pounds. MFT rocks!

2 years ago |The icon under the mode dial is the “Live View” icon. Perhaps this dial will toggle the live view settings and also enlarge pics on the lcd. The button with the “TV screen” on the right side of the viewfinder should toggle the lcd on and off…or mabey it is a diopter adjustment. Its hard to tell if it is a button or a knob. It would make sense that the viewfinder would have a sensor to turn off the lcd when the camera is raised to the eye. I think the flash is in the feaux mirror-box hump and would raise manually, hinging at the front of the hotshoe an acting as a flash reflector.

There’s surely something going on up there along with the viewfinder. Either there’s a flash in there, or the thing articulates, I’m guessing.

2 years ago |If this camera has the image quality of the G3/GX1, is water resistant, is able to focus Lumix lenses as quickly as M.Zuiko lenses and if the new image stabilization system is indeed more effective, then Micro Four Thirds will have a very capable new body option.
From an ergonomics point of view, I’m a little worried that the eye cup is roughly in the same plane as the rear screen. With the EVF’s central placement, that should be a recipe for oily smears. Olympus should have adopted either the corner EVF of the NEX-7 or the screen that folds inward coupled with a protruding EVF like on the Lumix GH1/2 and G1/2/3 models.

2 years ago |nice looking… except the hump detracts quite bit I think. Let’hope there is true functionality in it. Probably because of the flash. Frankly a flash on the left side to replace a control knob would be more practical. I am against so many knobs when there some exclellent designs with multifunction knobs that would work well in less space. The left hand works on the lens controls, the right one is the one that should have easy access to more controls.

Just an opinion ofcourse.

2 years ago |well I was never really that interested in oly but I must say WOW.. the only thing that disturbs me a little bit is hotshoe and small viewfinder but after big disappointment from panasonic if the video will be 1080/50p with better quality than stock gh2 or simmilar to hacked gh2 I will really hardly consider buying this little fellow over the gh2.. with battery grip it looks that it will nicely fit in your hands.. (I have the GH1 and I would prefer some kind of light battery grip because I don´t hold it with my all fingers..it´s a little bit small hehe) so oly… I´m giving you a chance.. better video..better iso performaance .. the 5axis stabilization is something interesting.. 2 years ago |Actually I think this is not the real deal. I wouldn’t call it fake either, details are mostly right. But if you look closer, the rendering (cause thats what it is most probably) of the lighting is different on lens and body. So both seem to be coupled via photoshop. Also the perspective of lens and body are not right, making it look a bit awkward.
My take on this: Pic comes right from Oly Guys, but to give people no hint about the sensor a picture or rendering of the body alone with an open mount(revealing any details about the “revolutionary” sensor) was stitched with an rendering of the upcoming lens, thus hiding the sensor area and giving a good look on the cam as a whole.
oh and I really like the body, seems to be about the size of the ep3 which works fine. Definitly tempts me even more to buy it
