Looks like the FZ100 is in a FZ35 body with the reach of the lens increased from 18X to 24x or 25-600mm and 1080HDi to match the competition. So far the specs are minimal at best so can only wait and see. Pany seems to be making only minimal changes in many models and since the FZ35 very popular as is with its small size & faster lens and operation sees no reason to change. I only wished they had included a larger EVF say 0.44″ size and added swivel screen to match the HS20, Hope that 720P is still an option but Pany is only following the competition advertizing hype that 1080Pi is better!
Looking at this model it sure looks like it is the FZ35 replacement rather than a separate model with maybe smart easy zoom permanently engaged to get to the longer tele optical reach but lower resolution with same lens and newer 14 mp sensor?
I’m pretty disappointed with the FZ100 spec sheet. Having previously owned an FZ50, I was hoping for something a bit more than a mild FZ35 refresh. The small sensor and massive pixel counts turn me off.
I also would have liked to see much more in the way of video, and a flippy screen. Oh well, it’s not for me
The FZ100 is what I’ve been looking for. The hotshoe, Raw and 1080 @60fps (I like the video look)HD are the features I’ve been looking for. I’ve tried the FZ35, Nikon P100 ( I liked this one alot), Canon SX20is, Olympus e-pl1, Panny LX3,GH1, GF1. I finally settled for the Sony HX1 and I also like this one alot. I just wanted a point and shoot with good zoom and the features of my old Nikon 8700 with HD 60fps. If sony upgraded the HX1 with RAW, 1080 60fps and a hotshoe, that would be great.
So the FZ100 will fit my needs. Hopefully pricing will stay around $399.
Well, I still have my 2 fz50s, and even though they dont get much use now, except 4 macro work, i still feel the camera design is better than this.
Ive read through the specs and it did mention free angle lcd. And this is way better than sony and fujis up /down version.
Also 11fps at full resolution? Impressive! Pity about the smaller sensor, and lack of zoom/focus ring like fz50. But at least the hotshoe is back! Maybe ill try one out. If any good with my oly tcon and mcon, then i may get one.
Nothing revolutionary or even very evolutionary about either of these cameras, or even the LX5. Disappointing. The FZ50 had a manual focus ring that I don’t see on this FZ100, which was a defining feature of that camera. This one doesn’t have it, so it’s just another zoom hybrid.
That FZ100 looks pretty impressive if the IQ is there. 24x zoom, RAW, 1080i + 720p, 11 fps continuous (hi speed 60 fps @ 3MP), stereo mic, f2.8. What’s not to like?
@Zaph
I dont like the slower lens at tele (f/5.2) .. but maybe at 486 mm it will still be f/4.4 … I also don’t think the CMOS sensor of FZ100 will peform better than FZ35 on image quality. Video is interlaced at Full HD and even if the resolution and frame rate is higher, the bitrate is the same, 17 Mbps so the compression is higher than for 720p/30 fps the FZ35 has. 600 mm compared to 486 mm is not that much of a difference (it’s like 1.25x so hardly noticeable) but the size is bigger with 5 mm on all sizes and 100 gr in weight. The battery will be less effective, 410 shots instead of 470 shots. If the sensor does not perform better, the only serious upgrade I see is the swivel screen with higher resolution. Still, this will probably cost $100 more than FZ35 when it was launched …. so about $150-200 compared to today pricing of FZ35. If the IQ is the same or as I suspect even worse and also looses 1/3 stop with the slower lens (smaller aperture), certainly not worth an upgrade (even if I am a fan of swivel screens).
A 25-500 mm camera with faster lens (f/2.4 – f/4.0), the same resolution 12 MP but half a stop better IQ and a swivel 460k screen would have been perfect for me. Now we’ll have to settle probably to a 1/3 stops slower lens at tele, same IQ or even a little worse as it is more crowded … just to make it 24x to match the competition. As far as I checked, most of the current owners of FZ35 are not impressed with this camera, only those considering a Nikon P100 or something like that seem to be happy.

But it would have been cooler if one of them had a swivel lcd like the G1/G2.
