(FT4) Olympus E-5 release postponed again?
Really, I hate it to give you such news! According to the same sources that told me the new Olympus E-5 was almost ready for launch the Olympus E-3
Everybody is telling me that it is a revolutionary model (not just an upgraded E-3) but we have no clue (if our informations are correct) why Olympus is waiting to announce it.
I have to remember you that we are a rumors site. So don’t blame on Olympus, we are talking about unofficial and unproven rumors ok?

2 years ago |I’m sure they know what they are doing at Olympus. To be honest, I didn’t expect the announcement until September (it’s a photokina year). If the few crumbs of hints about the E-5 turn out to be true (there were bits and pieces here and on Zone 10), it will be a well worth wait. In the mean time I am enjoying my E-3 a lot.

2 years ago |If its truly a revolutionary model it is very important for Olympus to get it right from the start. Olympus is well known for beeing inventive and for Oly it would be a disaster if a new top model with a completly new function or sensor, or whatever is new, is hampered by stupid faults, and the competition picks up on the idea before Oly gets it right. Better get it right before release!

2 years ago |I don’t think we will see a pro camera announcement until the Sept/ Oct time.
Then I predict 2011, four years is the right amount of time to get a full pro camera working with new advancements tested out in consumer models.

True but there is a very big buying season that they will miss as the weather improves. I imagine they caught it with the E-30 early last year but if they wait too long they will miss out…
I’ve been hoping to have an improved low-light model for this wedding season, even one stop helps. Hope they are listening….

2 years ago |At Photokina 2006, only a mock up of the E-P1 (yes, it’s name being the E-1 successor) was shown, but apart from the integrated power grip, it didn’t change much. The speculations were about the big mirror, integrated flash etc.
It took another year, until it actually reached the consumers on the street, early winter 2007.
Almost 2.5 years has passed now, so expect to see another mock up (E-3 successor) this autumn at the Photokina 2010. By the way, the E-400 was introduced at Photokina 2006, but only to the European market.
I suppose we first need to see updates to primarily E-4xx/E-5xx/E-6xx with video this year. They all need new sensors and image/video processing, similar to the PEN products. The form factors could stay, so it’s mainly an interior swap with the already available PEN products.
What about the E-30; It could again play a stopgap role, until the E-3 successor is out. How about an E-30n, with the PEN interior. At the same time, introduce a carefully selected lens with the E-30n.

2 years ago |They need to get a move on it. I’m ready to switch to Nikon or Canon due to no successor to E3. They must keep up.
Monty
2 years ago |sue – I’d like to see the successor too, and I agree that it’s important for Olympus to keep releasing new models at the high end. But the E1 was out for over four years before the E3 arrived. The E3′s been out for less than three. I know that they said they wanted to keep to a two-year schedule, IIRC, but it’s not unreasonable so far. Have patience.

Necesito un cuerpo Olympus nuevo ya, que hago?? me cambio a Nikon o Canon? LLevo mucho tiempo esperando… me salte la E-3, como yo hay mucha gente…

2 years ago |I also noticed the quote in the interview with Olympus US.
What about the timing being related to the new Panasonic sensors from the new factory? Presumably Olympus may have a version of a new sensor?
Anyway, I had an E1 system and loved the camera and lenses. I waited and waited for the E-3 and the SWD lens upgrades, but the truth was that the E-3 sensor was not up to the standards of what Nikon and Canon were doing, unless you are prepared to do a lot of PP work.
I’d still love to see a pro Olympus that lives up to the standard of the lenses – and if it gets an EVF so video is made easier, I’ll seriously consider dropping my Nikon D700. Pity it won’t arrive for the summer, though. Some great events are lined up in the UK.
Meanwhile, an E-630 with an EP-1 sensor and a microphone socket would be a great value replacement for my EP-1… (I need the flip-out screen for clamp-on video and also need to be able to mount a mike on the hotshoe.)

The lenses are the only reason I’m still here.
Olympus has frustrated my expectations after having spent so much money in his glass.
At this moment they don’t have one single model with all the essencial specs in the same body: Big OVF, 1/8000 s, high iso Perfomance; extended dynamic range; Big LCD with 920 000 dot, built in flash, more than 5 fps, HD vídeo. Is the 7D a top professional model ? Came on, we must be realistic, The E3 never had enough image quality to be a top Pro model.

2 years ago |Some info is better than non at all. A little tid bit here & there would help people hold off on jumping to currently much greener pastures. Nikon is looking awful nice since they have been improving thier lenses. Still some type of runup as there was with the E-3, especially if it is revalutionary (but without leaking the suprises) would let people know they are hard at work. Allot of questions about dedication to 4/3 since m4/3 showed up.

2 years ago |I’m so glad I jumped off this Olympus ship. The lenses were nice (& a great value) but don’t fool yourself in to buying the hype that Nikon’s & Canon’s are not as good. Maybe that’s true at the kit lens level, but at the higher end, I’ve been blown away by my new Nikon glass.
I’m having to do so much less PP work with the D3 than I had to do with the E-3. Obviously there’s a price difference, but to a pro, that’s not a huge thing when it saves days over the course of a job.
The E-3 was barely a pro spec camera at it’s inception. It can’t even hang with Canikon’s latest consumer bodies (other than weatherproofing) that are being offered now.
Sad.
time to go shopping
2 years ago |I need a new fully featured pro body before the wedding season hits. Olympus (not just rumor sites) kept telling me to hold off just a little longer & they’d have something that would be amazing.
Liars.
Buh-bye Olympus.

2 years ago |I can’t understand why Olympus bother with an E-3 successor at all. Their advantage is a smaller sensor which should enable smaller cameras. They should concentrate on a E-30 sized camera as the top of the line. Bringing out a “pro” model that will never be able to compete against Canon’s 50D/7D and Nikon D300s mid level models in image quality at high iso is such a waste.
Btw, I think Olympus is doing a pretty good job with their mid range models like E-30 and E-620 and I’m actually thinking about switching to Olympus.

The E-x Line is the most important for the E-system and 4/3. I want the next E-x ASAP and preferable on or before the 16.05.2010.

Sounds like you want a video camera not a still camera.
To others, I don’t think that the any of the Exxx ranges, or the E-30 needs updating yet, but the “Flagship” E-3 does. What it does not need is to be overblown with video, art filters and stacks of modes, it is meant to be pro level, it does not even need a built in flash, just the same build quality as the E-1. The gap between the release of the E-1 & E-3 was 4 years and 4 months, that means the E-5 will not be out until February NEXT YEAR!!
Just my opinon of course.

2 years ago |Sure…, fine, postpone if that means higher quality, but at least offer something like an E-50 (or something with feature sets that would be E-xx worthy) while everyone is waiting. I won’t buy an E-5 until the price drop, so that’s a LOOONG waiting for me. It’s hard for me to part with my nice Oly 4/3 lenses, but if they continue to do this…, I’ll slowly retire my Oly gears and move to Nikon. Even though I am sure Olympus knows what they’re doing. That’s why they push Pen line and state 12MP is more than enough.
I don’t mind if E-5 uses EVF, if that means larger VF (though it should be better than Panasonic G1′s, which is very good until one gets into a dimly lit room; but low-lit place is why we need to use VF!). I really would love to have a higher resolution LCD, so I can check the focus of my photos more accurately (I don’t want to go home and then find out the photo is unusable). I’d love to have an electronic level, like E-30 has. Higher ISO performance, even just one stop better is good enough for me. More importantly, higher dynamic range. Which I really wish they’d stay with 12MP for that reason…. Overblown highlight (because of ISO performance and/or dynamic range) is not something higher pixel count can fix. People who need (notice I didn’t say “want”) higher pixel count should get a full frame.
12MP is good enough for up to 11×14″. Even 12×18″ is acceptable if the picture has low noise; more reason why ISO performance and dynamic range are so much more important. Anyways, when was the last time you shot with f/22 or smaller aperture, that 12MP can no longer provide enough detail to a 12×18″ print with deep DoF? Besides, 4/3 sensors hits its max detail between f/4-f/8, and anything smaller than f/11 is not recommended (though it’s not the end of the world with high grade or above Oly lenses).

2 years ago |… while we are kvetching about features, let me add that the next body should solve the 14-35mm low-light AF issue too, and make it into the ultimate lens not only in IQ as it is today, but in plain old functionality..
Oly or nothing
2 years ago |Well that is true. But the point is why until now oly haven’t been giving us a sneak peak with the next E3 so we know what are the ideas of 4/3 pro dslr… If they are going to released a upgrade of the e3 well all my oly gears are going back to the dry box. And get a VV0D sad

2 years ago |After the E-1 and E-3 in my bag, I definitely waiting what Olympus offers next which everybody wish for better than E-3. I hope the postponement means something extraordinary. Of course it does not stop us to take photos now while we are waiting but consumer expectation should be in high time for Olympus.

2 years ago |I am saddened at my Olympus investment in 43 and also am considering Nikon. I have the money now and in this economy I can’t wait very longer for Olympus to fulfill the E5. The savings may dry up soon. Olympus released a lot of 43 cameras/lenses a few years ago one after the other, and now a gunning out m43 cameras/lenses. They should pace themselves better. I have an entry E520 and want to upgrade, but can I wait till (when)? Not sure. I think if Olympus wants to keep its customers after this delay, they need to at least keep us posted on what is coming, what to expect and WHEN to expect it.

2 years ago |Any Olympus owner will be only too well aware that Olympus always plays with its loyal followers (the E3 release springs immediately to mind and was the the detriment of the 4/3′s system as many got fed up waiting and shifted over to Canon/Nikon.)
But when it was finally released, the patience was rewarded by a standout camera… and its replacement will be another innovative camera…
The wait is an Olympus thing… but we are rarely disappointed by what comes.

2 years ago |For those who don’t want any video, move too MF digital. Simple
fact is; for photo jurnaists, wedding, people who like to just shoot video, keeping up with what others offer, etc. it would lessen the market for the camera. Besides the fact that tech benifits go both ways, & video intergraition reduces cost of the product! If U don’t like video don’t use it! But don’t try 2 push for a product without it in this day, it will limit units sold thus increase $ & the few people that buy one will extend the product cycle.

2 years ago |Like everyone else I am disappointed to hear that the new Olympus DSLRs are likely postponed until September.
I bought into the 4/3 system because of the quality optics and started with an E-510. Since then I have been slowly building my optics (12-60, 50 Macro, 70-300) and had confidence Olympus would have an appropriate camera upgrade for me when I was ready. Now I’m ready and don’t know quite what to do.
I like the ruggedness of the E-3 over the E-30 but don’t want to buy in to another 10Mp sensor. I know the arguments here that 10 or 12 Mp is more than enough – and it may be if you are going to live in the print world – but just as we are leaving film behind, we are leaving prints behind and moving to more purely digital presentations. On a 60 inch screen, more resolution, dynamic range, and less noise is certainly noticable.
I understand that innovation takes time and that we may all be blown away by whatever Olympus finally does deliver. But in this interim we are somewhat left in the lurch.
I don’t think it unreasonable to expect that while we have all been patiently waiting, Olympus could have upgraded the existing E-3 & E-30 models to keep them more current. For example, everyone has been asking for a larger, higher resolution LCD for both cameras. This should have been easily done – they could even keep the screen size the same and just gone with the better, higher density display.
It should also not be that difficult to put newer versions of the 12.3Mp sensor in both models and to tweak the software to give us some better dynamic range, less noise, and perhaps some increases to sensitivity. Improvements to low light focusing would also be universally welcomed. Not that important to me, but video capability could also be added to match the expected feature set now at this price point.
And these are all evolutionary changes that could be made between the revolutionary leaps.
If Olympus is unwilling or unable to make these evolutionary changes, then they should at least adjust the pricing downward a bit for the unaltered models. I would probably happily buy a current E-30 if it were $250-300 less expensive but at the current price point and state of the competition, I’m not ready to jump in.
Perhaps Olympus does have something truly revolutionary for us – an exponentially better sensor or perhaps a modular camera body that would allow us to do technology upgrades the way we can with computer systems.
Or maybe Olympus is abandoning either the full size 4/3 standard or perhaps the DSLR market segment altogether. I remember before when they left that market – I still have my OM-4T. Fortunately I was able to continue using it with the constantly improved 35mm film regardless of Olympus’ commitment to produce or improve it. Not quite so easy in the digital world where we depend on virtually everything from one company.
If Olympus does decide they have gotten all they can from the 4/3 sensor in the DSLR market, then I hope they will at least give us means to use the great lenses we purchased with a larger sensor camera. Perhaps that wide angle converter has something to do with that.
Regardless, I think Olympus owes us, their loyal customers, at least a match light to get us out of the dark we’re currently left in. I hope they are listening to all the comments on this and other sites!

2 years ago |No complaints please; I’m still waiting to upgrade from my E-330. In a way it’s a good thing because if the E-5 is a long way off, a discounted E-3 will still be a big step up. In the meantime. I get great photos from my 7.5 megapixel wonder as long as I don’t push ISO above 400, or try to use autofocus in low light.
