(FT4) UPDATED: More E-5 specs….
UPDATE: Zone-10 can’t believe this specs are true. They made a list with all rumored special features of the new E-5. But that’s only speculation. The specs below are probably correct
New rumors about the E-5 do confirm the specs we posted few days ago:
- Magnesium weather proof body
- Dual memory card slots (not sure if CF+SD or 2xSD)
- 12MP sensor
- 11 AF points
- 6fps
- Image stabilization
- Anti-dust feature
- Some kind of a rotating/tilting LCD display
- HD video @ 720P with 30fps
- Built-in wireless flash
- 100% viewfinder coverage

E-5? Are you 100% sure of that name?

Or is it just that during rumour times, this has been established as the name for the E-3 successor?
I doubt Olympus has communicated the name yet.

2 years ago |Really boring specs.
Reading these totally out-dated specs., I think that Olympus R&D must be full of idiotic ideas that make R&D believe this boring spec might have a chance to grab expected market share.
Even I currently use E-system and PEN for life photo, when I read these recent rumors and releases from OLY, I am becoming affirmative to sell all my 43 and m43 gadgets soon. Due to my frustrations, none of my friends will give OLY a try because OLY’s failed release in this Photokina.
OLY seems very arrogant and infantilized that wrongly evaluate these specs. could keep their current users. I think this is fairly the specs. for 18 months ago.
To keep current users and to present the ability for PRO body, the bottom lines are:
→ Full HD @ 1080p
→ 14MP sensor
→ Size down to relativelly smaller than E-30 (e.g. PENTAX K-7)
→ 7 plus frames per second
→ Better and expanded DR
→ Faster and acurate AF in low light environment
If OLY user really feel un-happy about this new pro body, then there is totally no chance for OLY to grab any new users given SONY alpha is obviously advanced in most aspects.

2 years ago |The consumer needs more bells and whistles, but for the professional photographer the important features expected from the E5 are the same as always, a strong, light, ergonomic and durable body, a big and bright viewfinder, an improvemente in the continuous focusing system and a sensor that delivers good colors, better dynamic range and better ISO performance (if shooting sports), all the rest is superfluous and it can be no revolution there, cameras are cameras, nothing more, so if this one delivers one or two stops more of dynamic range and ISO and improves C-AF compared to the E3 it will satisfy the audience who is the target.

2 years ago |Something is very wrong here a camera like that as a flagship will drive customers away. Is this a sign that development of the FT system has slowed down to a crawl? I need to source a replacement for my E5 and 510 as their both showing lots of wear from years of use but this offering is poor at best. I never thought I would move system as I love my lenses like children but if the body fails to preform in this rapidly evolving market I may not have a choice. It’s a sad day for Olympus pro users.

Besides, it will probably be priced in the same range as the E-3 was priced initially. Do you know any other body in that price range that is that sturdy and weather sealed? No? Me neither. Together with the Zuiko Pro lenses you got a decent camera you can use in pouring rain, and the investment is relatively small.

2 years ago |As others have mentioned, there is no way Oly will release a successor to the E3 with and additional 2MP and 720p. It simply does not make sense.
The article on Zone10 makes some good points, including the fact that with each release of a pro body Oly has done something(s) more. Things that were not available on any other pro SLR. That included dust reduction on the E1, LiveView with tilting LCD on the E3, and others. Why wait 3 years of development only to marginally increase the capabilities of the E3? They could have released the rumored specs 1.5 years ago and called it the E3s or E3MkII like Nikon and Canon do. Then take peoples money again this yeah, with an E5 and stick the GH2 sensor in it. How easy is that!?
Logic tells us there is more to it than what we’ve read here. These specs are probably purposely leaked to keep us losers busy typing at work.
What if this is a 12mp sensor, but has crazy dynamic range like Zone10 speculates? Maybe from Kodak or from Fuji like the EXR. (I would say Sigma, but they wouldn’t give Oly their best sensor whn the SD15 is still using the old Foveon.) Imagine a sensor with 15+ stops of DR and great low light ISO with one of the SHG lenses in front of it! This would move alot of people to notice.
Again, this is all speculative. But it just makes no sense to mildly upgrade a Pro camera after 3 years and not expect to be slaughtered by the media and your competitors. In fact, this would even hurt m4/3! There are may Oly users right now, that if insulted by a lame upgrade to their Pro body would go to Pany, Sony, or wait for the big two for a mirrorless system.
Lets see what happens. Im willing to bet there is more than meets the eye here…

2 years ago |These specs doesn’t make any sense at all, seeing that Olympus has always introduced something new in the market with its flagship cameras. Sincerely, I hope would be true this story: http://zone-10.com/cmsm/index.php?option=com_content&task=view&id=535&Itemid=1

I have no problem with a EVF, just fix the frame rate issues with low light and give me 5fps+ and I will buy both the nokton25 and noktor50 f0.95 and some more SHG glass
Then you can give it video and focus tracking to produce wonders with SHG
A mirror-less pro can do things that competition mirror pros simply cannot and that is reason enough to do it I think, even though video is not necessary. PUT PRESSURE ON COMPETITION
Maybe I should stop dreaming
The article did give some hope though

2 years ago |I think someone is fooling us.
The plain spec’s can be true but they don’t tell anything on image quality. The E3 successor might still have 12 stops DR and noise free iso 1600. In that case I would be fine with 12 mp.
12 or 14 MP, it is not important, as long as image quality makes a

Even E-PL1 that just release with same censor size still do better job than Nikon D3000 (which image quality & noise control of D3000 can par with Nikon D90). That mean image quality of E5 should be sharp upgrade from E3 for sure. What’s still do you want it ???
New release of Nikon still stick with 12 MP. Is it make any Nikon user fail and jump to other brand ?
Movie ? Do you want to shoot a picture or video ? If you are the movie maker, please do buy video camcorder for the right job
ANGRY Olympus Owner
2 years ago |Well if a photographer wants to start doing video they will not get a camcorder to lug around… they will get a one of the many DSLR’s on the market that do video. Its a pretty much standard feature now on cameras
That’s why it would be very prudent for oly to, like Dan said, “Do it Right”
plus to get the dof you can achieve with some fast lenses would cost a FORTUNE on a HD camcorder (exculde the m43 one). That is why many chose HD capable DSLR
I for one am looking forward to video with some SHG glass, and I know I’m not alone
kaine
2 years ago |I dont think your gonna get it
Video seems to be Panasonics allowed area while Olympus allowed area is cheap nasty unfriendly overpriced EVILs. The whole EVIL area seems cheap and nasty, you cant even wear a GH1 with a neckstrap without it breaking and that camera was for sale for £1300 in UK at release, the cheek! EVIL is living up to its name.
Dan
2 years ago |I agree with those who say to wait until we see the image quality. Oly did say at one point that they would be focusing on that more than adding more mp, and that may be the correct approach. That said, it would take a HUGE leap for them to get from where they are now to class-leading high ISO noise. If they’ve made that leap, then this may well be worth the wait. I’m not holding me breath.
As for video, I agree that it isn’t an essential feature of the camera, but if they’ve decided to include it, why not do it well? Why go in half way? It doesn’t inspire confidence when it comes their commitment to the overall performance of the camera.
But as always, these are just rumors, so who knows.

2 years ago |I definitely would rather pay $2,000 to $2,200 for a camera with some little more impressive raw performance numbers for video as a flagship DSLR from Olympus. I have no idea if there is enough market demand and willingness of customers to pay that would make my preferences in a camera design into a profitable business proposition for Olympus.
However, these specs are just rumors, and we will have to see what is actually announced in a few weeks.
Also, maybe there are some really innovative yet to be announced advances in the camera.
We will just have to wait and see.
Monty Leman
2 years ago |I am at the point of not trusting any rumors at all any more…we shall see when we get the official word. All I can say is that most of these are in the “no duh” camp, since they were there in the E3 too.
To all those who are in the “I’m going to leave Olympus!” chorus: So what exactly is it that other brands do that you need so badly? More megapixels? Higher frame rate? More AF points?! All of those have been available elsewhere for a few years, so I’m not sure why anyone would choose to pick up and leave now.
Long lived the E-3 flagship -> Welcome E-5 !
2 years ago |The first Olympus DSLR with video must be the flagship E-5, not the “economic flagship” successor to E-30.
Therefore, I also do believe we will soon hear about the E-3 successor. Wheather the flagship will have 720p or 1024p doesn’t matter in my mind, Olympus main focus is DSC, not video. See how Panasonic differentiate their models.
I hope the E-5 will be a slimmer camera body than the current E-3, but still strongly built and with the same excellent weather seals.
Perhaps moving to SDXC will help, as well as concentrating on fewer connectors and buttons.
Unfortunately, I think it’s too early for a Bluetooth protocol. Additional GPS could be integrated into a new Power battery holder.
In order for the camera to become a success, it needs to be a smooth photographic tool, delivering the results one would expect in year 2010. Unfortunately, today, the sensor is the crucial component, and there are only three manufacturers left, thet can combine video, live view and still photography, as well as autofocus from the sensor.
Considering all manufacturers are on the same sophisticated level, which I strongly believe, this still gives the µ43 about ~2/3EV handicap to the APS-C cameras, and ~2EV to 135FF. It has been good enough, and is still good enough. However 135FF id 2EV away, which in some situations can be bridged, but not in all photographic situations.
ANGRY Olympus Owner
2 years ago |I think you are describing a good E30 successor
E3 doesn’t need to be slimmer in my opinion, honestly I would prefer a built on vertical grip like a 1d or d3, though know it wont happen
with video coming I kinda expect more buttons
If you want slimmer, E-XX is a great alternative in my opinion
I don’t see a need to go smaller though, Especially if you want to use SHG glass on it, and if your not then E-xx fits the slot perfect
If its only 720@30fps I think that will result in very brutal reviews by the photographic world. And to a degree that does matter
If flag has 720@30 when will 1080 come? years? It would have to be at next flagship announcement right, unless they bring 1080 to a lower level camera in coming months which would make no sense in my opinion
720@30 is the lowest you can go(excluding rate), will all new E’s be the same video? or will some lower E’s have better video then flag? or will the flag be the only video capable E
what ever the case if it really is 720@30fps, better video would be coming in many months later and better video is already overdue right now!
And if that better video doesn’t find itself in the flag that makes it worse

2 years ago |The “I’m going to leave Olympus now” posts are incredible. I understand being disappointed but the camera isn’t even out yet and no reviews have been performed. I also don’t understand the desire for high megapixels either, especially with a smaller sensor than the competition. What would really be incredible is a 8-10 MP, low-light monster. Then again, I guess most “pros” will be using this outdoors or in a lit studio environment.
60fps would be awesome, but I expect that in the m43 realm with all of the lenses that are being marketed as silent focusing. These don’t exist for 43, so video is not the 43 priority. Especially since all of the “pros” are saying they would rather not have video in their still camera for some reason. I bet the image quality will be pretty good compared to the 7D. Only a couple weeks until we know for sure.

It’s like saying I really want my car to be a truck too. You want a truck, buy a truck.
I need 1-2 stops more (call it EV, call it ISO); faster AF; C-AF that works well, some more DR would always be nice and weather sealing…and I’ll put out the $xxxx for the E-5.
And keep CF; all pros have standardized on CF now and that media is the same for Nikon and Canon.
Better job on what they started with the E-3…
dCap
2 years ago |hold your horses people … there is only one thing that this E-5 needs to do:
- include a chip that has the low light ability of the Nikon D700 / D3
that’s it!
Look at the price of the 14-54/2.8/3.5 and 50-200/2.8-3.5 … try and find the equivalent. Have you seen the price of the new Canon 400/2.8 IS. Okay f2.8 vs f3.5 but the Canon is over 11x the price of the (yes its a zoom) Oly 50-200/2.8-3.5.
And who else makes f2 zooms? Nobody!
The E-30 is really well designed and in operation its wonderful. Its an upgrade of the E-3 apart from the magnesium alloy thing (and weather sealing?). The E-30 is fast and has Oly’s latest chip (until two weeks time).
E-5 has to delivery the best chip the FourThirds system has ever seen.
(then we just keep quiet while the Nikon and Canon folk spend 2x, 3x, 5x, and more on their lenes) …. GRIN!
Hombre
2 years ago |A FourThirds sensor is in INTRINSIC 2 stops disadvantage compared to FF chips, so it is practically impossible bring it somewhere near their performance. In fact, a 4/3 camera equipped with the celebrated f/2 zooms is perfectly comparable to a FF camera with f/4 zooms of the equivalent reach. If people learned to live with that fact, there would be far less unrealistic expectations such as this.
Rob
2 years ago |Its true, I agree. It better produce good high ISO and decent DR, otherwise it defeats the purpose of those awesome lenses. Its hard to sell those features in specs and marketing though. The proof will lie with the head to head comparison with a D3 or D700.
Rob
2 years ago |The sad truth is that the commercial success of this camera really determines the future course for Olympus. If this camera is a non seller, I would expect Olympus to almost completely abandon 43 development. This is troubling if you are waiting on nice new lenses.
The specs of the camera alone will probably not deter too many previous Olympus owners from buying the camera, but it does nothing to bring someone new into the system.
So, there is still hope that rescue can come in the form of
1. Amazing IQ, huge DR and ISO ability. that may attract serious enthusiast. I still contemplating buying an old Fuji S5 Pro for DR alone and that camera is really old now.
2. A Modular system
3. maybe this is a trick and only the E30 mk II specs and not the E-5

GH2 sensor? No way, GH2 sensor should have even more megapixels.
Kodak sensor? Be serious, which one?
So I’m afraid it’s still the well-known G1–G2–PEN sensor. Bye-bye, E–5!

2 years ago |PS … we should be comparing the E-5 spec to the current top of the line: E-30. The E-30 took over from the E-3 when it was launched. So:
ALL of this lot is an improvement over the already excellent E-30:
- Magnesium weather proof body
- Dual memory card slots (not sure if CF+SD or 2xSD)
- 12MP sensor [but lets make sure its a NEW high ISO wonder chip]
- 100% viewfinder coverage
And Canon/Nikon don’t have IS in the camera. Come on Oly, do us proud!
