(FT4) UPDATED: More E-5 specs….
UPDATE: Zone-10 can’t believe this specs are true. They made a list with all rumored special features of the new E-5. But that’s only speculation. The specs below are probably correct

- 12MP sensor
- 11 AF points
- 6fps
- Image stabilization
- Anti-dust feature
- Some kind of a rotating/tilting LCD display
- HD video @ 720P with 30fps
- Built-in wireless flash
- 100% viewfinder coverage

2 years ago |John– I’m curious about the “more glass at both wide and tele ends”. Zuiko 7-14mm, Zuiko 8mm, Zuiko 50-200mm (400mm high end with crop factor), along with the 1.4 teleconverter seem like reasonable lenses.

2 years ago |I bet Oly will not disappoint us! Ok, 12MP… Do we really need more? I’m more than happy with 10MP of my current E-3. Give me some +7 to -7 EV DR and even 8MP will do
Or give me 12MP with no noise at ISO 12800+ and E-5 is the winner.
I guess we’ll have to wait till final specs are out. I’m 100% sure that new E-5 will have some WOW!! surprise thingy. It’s flagship camera after all.

2 years ago |Guys
Pop over to Photorumors….the new Fuji 4/3 camera has been scooped.
And it’s got a 12mp Fuji sensor.
Is this the new E-5 sensor…?
Neonart
2 years ago |I surely do hope that Fuji joins the party! If we get a Fuji option in sensors that would be another feather in the hat for 4/3, and more options for cameras and lenses. (Probably m4/3 bodies and lenses)
If the new E5 has a killer Super CCD EXR with crazy dynamic range and high ISO capabilities, it could be a game changer.
Lets hope for this…
Michael
2 years ago |Agree, the new E-5 sensor has to be something special – it could be Fujifilm one. Those EXRs are not available in bigger size as 4/3 format is – and huge dynamic range is what FT never had. If there will be old LiveMOS then who will buy this? Unique sensor (in high-end IQ terms) is the Olympus E-System rescuer.

really pros looking for art filters and 1080 vids on their bodies now? we have to remember oly is one of the ‘traditional’ photography brands out there like pentax. So dont expect the same bells and whistles as other brands.
ever wondered why after all these years we still have only 2 types of flash. but those 2 already cover what you need in photography. the rest is up to your skills

2 years ago |I think the poster requesting art filters is being sarcastic, which is sometimes hard to convey in a web format.
I have art filters on my E-30 and have never used them. I don’t complain about the filters being there. I just don’t think the camera is the best place to perform DSP post-processing of images.
The art filters feature is probably targeted at casual photographers that just want to immediately upload photos to facebook to share with friends. That is not my thing in photography.
However, the art filters are just going to be DSP algorithms that were ported to the camera and stored in non-voltaile memory with the firmware. Art filters are not going to be a major development cost because the algorithms do not even have to be efficiently ported as they are not being executed real-time during image capture.
Thus, I don’t get upset about the art filters in a camera. If some people use them, then great. However, for me they are something to just ignore and are not a reason to complain because the art filters were not that costly to include in a camera.
If any camera company ever makes an open operating system camera, then users could choose whether to download any add-on art filter apps to the camera.

2 years ago |dont get me wrong, i dont mind having art filters in any camera and i agree that more functions available will be most welcome.
what i am saying is it is also not less of a camera if those functions are not present, especially when the target market are pros or aspiring pros. so art filters or not, 720p or 1080p, these are just extra functions… the prime concern should be better IQ and AF which what the former E-3 users were really complaining about for years
ANGRY Olympus Owner
2 years ago |These features requested are not bells and whistles any more. And People don’t expect them because other brands have it its expected because the Olympus Pens have/had it for over a year
I really don’t think its too much to ask for…
I actually think it will help Olympus more then it will help me,
they can gain lots new people with a good camera, they already have the BEST lenses on market
napalm
2 years ago |PENs have art-filters, E-5 might have them. PENs have 720p video, so will E-5
so why the frustration then for what is said to be basic specs?
ANGRY Olympus Owner
2 years ago |It is only upseting because this camera is only picking up relics from the pen which has been around for a year
if it was 60fps @ 720, that’s fine
but 30fps is not good enough, its the lowest
the GH1 is like a 400 dollar camera when u minus the 800 lens and it does 720@60fps and 1080 with NP, and its old
maybe they didn’t go all out on the video cause the camera has a mirror and they didn’t work in autofocus during video like the 5Dmk2
maybe I should just wait until the modular camera comes out
I just want oly to make something that can replace my aged E3 and give me auto-focus video so I don’t have to buy a GH1/2
A mirror-less pro would answer that (not a micro pro, a mirror-less pro)
I will take a EVF in place of mirror if i can get focusing, tracking, and face in my video on my Zuiko
I just wish they would hurry up and do it
Also for all the delays and postpones, I would have thought the specs above would have been better/ more shocking
No 1080 on the pro, then when will oly bring 1080? panny has 1080 for long time. Will 1080 come on next flag after E5? if not it would have to come to a lower level E camera and if it did how can a lower level E have better video then the flag? Thats not wise
Only other option is to no bring 1080 at all and that would be suicide, or they can just replace th E5 in a year, maybe its just a stepping stone to the “merged” 43 & m43
My E3 is still good, i might just keep it and get a GH2, the only thing is focusing my SHG on it with adapter wont work (auto)
Modular need to come soon

2 years ago |this is sooo right napalm.
there are over 100 comments here, but i believe that there are only max 3 people which really want/can buy this camera. All the others are just talking nonsense.
These 3 people need a sturdy, lightwieght outdoor camera. The video function is a nice gimmick (for some documentation) – nothing more – cause they are scooting picutres and not “collecting” cameras.
The Artfilter are ridiculouse, but also the scene-modes. But they can be easily avoided. What i dont use cant get in my way.
What about the 12MP. 12 MP are enough if you do not have to crop. If you know how to shoot – no problem at all.
Olympus has improved there IQ with every new camera, so nothing to worry.
But i still believe, that there will be more MP, because as you can see here. Out of 100 there are 95 “joe average”s which are flaming for more pixel.

2 years ago |i have a feeling what the rest of us really want here is not an E-5 but just an updated E-30 or E-520… given that some of us are looking more into FEATURES than PERFORMANCE. we can hope Oly still releases another 4/3 body aside from the E-5 but so far no such news. so if E-5 does not satisfy our needs, maybe wait for the next planned cameras for 2011 or jump ship if you want.
as for me, i think i’d be fine with my old Oly bodies til 2011 (maybe even 2012)

2 years ago |What I find amazing is that for years almost all Olympus users has been saying that the biggest issue of 4/3 that needs ro be solved is the high ISO performance. And now, when the 12 mp rumor clearly points that this is the main issue that the camera will try to adress, everybody is suddenly disapointed. It even seems to me that there was some vote on this site about what do you want from the new Olympus cameras, and quite a percentage voted for 10mp high iso camera!
To those concerned with video: for me it is clear that video is not the focus of the flagship. It is much more a focus for the micro 4/3. But in the same time I dissagree whith those that don’t want video at all: additionnals features can always be useful in some occasions, and nobody is forcing you to use them if don’t want (same is valid for artistic filters) As long as they do not induce compromises with IQ, it is better to have them, even if almost never use them.
Rob
2 years ago |I don’t get the impression that people are upset about the 12mp, but your point is well taken. The specs will probably only deter the early adopters, and outsiders looking in.
I think the real test will come with the reviews. This camera better have good DR,ISO and such otherwise Olympus will probably be reduced to ashes. less than impressive specs with less than impressive image quality will spell disaster.

2 years ago |Well, to me those specs seem like Olympus has paid attention to m4/3rds only. This “new” flagship seems to be build from pieces of already developed equipment and updated only with couple of new gimmicks to confuse old school Oly-fanboys and tap the money from them. I hope that Olympus isn’t that stupid, because only some of us can be fooled like that.
That is only a scenario, for I hope I’m terribly wrong and Olympus releases an amazing camera which produces noiseless pictures up to ISO 12800, best dynamic range on the market and 1080p video @ 24fps. Of course, IQ of the pictures is the first priority, but 1080p@24 video should be almost a basic feature in high end DSLRs, thus omission of it would be a radical failure.
12 megapixels is more than enough if above mentioned qualities are provided.

2 years ago |If this was the best they could come up with after so much time it would be ridiculous and market suicide. Therefore (I feel like Sherlock Holmes here) there MUST be more. Has to be.
If you look at the history of Olympus, they have a proud tradition of innovation. So that is what we should expect for the E5. And if I’m wrong, well they’ve blown it big-style.
But let’s wait and see before we rush to judge eh?
Alfons
2 years ago |Hey, how about the Panasonic patent of tri-layer sensor?
With a oversized 12MP sensor, there might be around 10MP worth efective pixels on 4/3 crop. That in three layer tech would be something!
