(FT3) Panasonic LVF1 viewfinder replacement soon?

Yesterday we noticed a price drop on the Panasonic DMW-LVF1 External Live Viewfinder for the Panasonic GF1. This made us suspicious. We asked around a little bit and that is what we got:
According to infos we received from Japan the Panasonic DMW-LVF1 is going to be replaced!
ANother japanese source sent us following t0xte:
“Sales clerks at several major retailers around Tokyo (Bic Camera, Yodobashi Camera) have confirmed that the LVF1 is no longer being manufactured by Panasonic, and most places are either out of stock or “on order” with no estimated arrivals.”

2 years ago |It would be great with new one with better resolution, but it could also be that Panasonic figured out that the original price was ridiculously high.

I see two potential benefits, first a lower price for the existing EVF bringing it down to a reasonable price for it’s quality and second a better quality EVF on the horizon (hopefully). If it is only because sales of the current are not what they hoped and their scrapping it in lieu of a built in EVF on all future models without offering a backwards compatible EVF for those of us with a GF1 wanting an quality EVF, it would be disappointing, to me anyway.

2 years ago |Either way it is good news especially if means the model with EVF like that depicted in Pany’s patent application may be coming soon.
The problem confronting Pany with the hotshoe mounted EVF as needed to be small for GF1 form factor and also not interfer with operation of the flash! The existing size is fine although small but making it higher resolution inevitably results in greater size so may indeed be a problem to upgrade significantly unless new technology like OLED EVF enables them to keep size down?
Alternatively I do hope they have developed a better resolution EVF and since it is optional hotshoe mtd they can introduce at any time it becomes available and not wait for new camera model debut especially as needed to counter E-PL1 sales with EVF2.

2 years ago |I wish we could see this FT5 soon. I don’t think we will see a GF2 with an integrated viewfinder due to the size constraints the model has. Even if there’s a patent in that direction I think it is not feasible in such a compact size YET! Maybe for the GF3/4 when OLED will be more developed it might become a reality.

2 years ago |Admin, hope you can check with your contacts at Panasonic! Been eagerly waiting for an update on the LVF1
I’m hoping that Panny will go the Oly way and have a LVF2 that will fit both the GF1 and GFxx whenever it i released. I do hope we see an updated DLux 2 type rangefinder, but I think it will be separate from the GF line…
LVF1 sold out at B&H.

Just look at the back of the Leica X1 and install the existing Epson LVF2 tilting viewfinder in the upper left corner and that is what you get with the screen in middle to right of EVF. It would look just like a mini LC1 but the innards would be mainly GF1 sensor, lens mt, shutter motor module. Pany may be using another manufacture like Hitach or even Ricoh for their version but no reason they could not buy product or high resolution one slightly smaller from Epson as their own G1 version would not fit – ie too wide.and big. I would expect the high resolution magnification would be 1x compared to G1 1.3X ( present 0.5x EVF on GF1).

I guess they will release the new VF2 with LX5 or GF2.
LX5 have the same hot-shoe “build-up” that GF1 have. The hot-shoe on LX3 is much lower.
