(FT3) About the Olympus E-5 and the 400-series

A fake image of the E-5
Finally some new rumors about Olympus!
You will remember that we told you that the Olympus E-5 release has been delayed because of the MicroFourThirds success. Olympus seems to not have enough production capability for MicroFourThirds and FourThirds stuff. Acoording to one of our known and trusted sources “there are new late changes being made to the E-3/E-30
replacement duo as we speak“. Interesting is the fact that he says E-3/E-30. Could the E-5 be considered as the replacement for both cameras?
He also told me that “there is some confusion right now as to what we want to do with the 400-series E-System group because it is possible that the Pen range could take up the slack here”
P.S.: We are 99% certain the Olympus E-5 will be announced soon (between June and September).

3 years ago |The E-4xx line, being a budget one, should be replaced by a line of mirrorless models similar to Panasonic Gx series.
The E-3 successor should be a DSLR, if possible, with a m4/3 to 4/3 adapter with mirror we saw couple of day ago here.

3 years ago |* A “replacement duo” should refer to two different cameras, possibly announced at the same time.
* Applying late changes to the replacement models means that: i) the first prototypes have been around for quite a while, ii) Olympus wants to make sure it has a competitive design vs. the Canon 7D and possibly Nikon D400, and iii) the announcement will be made later rather than sooner – perhaps September – October 2010.
* IMO the E-6xx series is the true E-4xx series replacement. The PENs are quite different.
YeahYeah
3 years ago |I would see something like that :
- Olympus E-5 as a top pro camera, facing Canon 7D and Nikon D300s
- Olympus E-50 as a medium camera facing Nikon D90
And an entry level Pen (low price E-PL1), a medium one (E-Px1) and a top one (E-P3)
this would be perfect

3 years ago |an E-30 with video and E-PL1′s imaging is good enough for me. I’ve been holding off buying an E-30 for months now. this is very welcome news for me and hoping we hear some good stuff soon.

3 years ago |Same here I have been holdig off for the e30 I really hope they revamp the UI make it look like we are in 2010. I really want to get some nice lenses too like a 50-200 but with my e410 it just wont feel right. bring on the E-5! HDMI and video bring it on olympus bring it on!

3 years ago |I just hope they optimise the sensor for the 4/3 lens series. We need to catch up with the competitors in DR and SNR! Cant wait for the E3 successor. It will either work or die. I for now, have resisted to buy the E-PL1. Waiting to see the E3 successor.

3 years ago |Glad to know that there will be an E-3 successor. I am waiting to buy into Olympus because my Canon D60 is showing its age and I do not have a lot of Canon lenses anyway.
I have been holding off because I do not want to get a 12-60, a 50-200, and possibly a 7-14 just to see the regular 4/3 line die soon after. Looks like this will not be the case.
I think DSLR will become a niche market a few years down the road, with mirrorless camera being the mainstream. I myself can forgo the mirror if they have enough good lenses for the mount.

3 years ago |It’s torture, I tell you! Any idea what “announcement date” means for “release date”? Still, perhaps it’s for the best if they don’t announce the E-5 before my big trip this summer…it removes the temptation to splurge on it.

3 years ago |I am also very anxious for the E-5. I have been biting my lips to resist getting a D300s until the news comes out.

3 years ago |Hey Monty, I was wondering the same thing. If there is an announcement on June 1, what is an expected release date? And based on that release date, when would a camera be widely available?

3 years ago |I’m hoping for E-5 with usable ISO3200, it would great!!
Best if higher FPS and better res display (3″ vga will be great)

3 years ago |It depends on the camera and how much pent up demand there was for it. IIRC, the E-510 was announced in late April or early May, and I pre-ordered the two lens kit from my camera store, and had it on June 1st. Similarly, the E-P2 was announced in early November, and I had mine by December 5th (again, I pre-ordered it).
I wasn’t an early adopter for the E-3, so I didn’t track it closely, but I think it was announced in November and people had them in December (providing they bought the kit with the 12-60mm).
When I pre-ordered the E-510, there were 3 pre-orders, but the store only got one camera on the first day (which I got), and the other 2 people presumably had to wait a few days.
In terms of the US, in general Olympus seems to ship to the stores that sell the most Olympus gear first, then the other stores, and sometime later it shows up in Amazon. If you want/need it ASAP, you typically have to order it in a kit form, as body only often times trails the kit by 1-2 months.
The stores that usually seem to get shipments include (in no particular order):
Hunts in Melrose, MA (my store)
Precision Camera in Austin, TX
Samys in southern CA
B&H/Adorama in NY
Mikes in Denver
Possibly Arlington Camera in Arlington, TX

3 years ago |My predictons for the E-5 / E-50:
* Better High ISO (Up to 12800? / Fine results up to 3200?!)
* Better DR
* 3″ display
* HD movie recording

3 years ago |I presume Olympus has some real weird stuff coming with the new pro body. They have already brought us dust reduction and life view.

3 years ago |Michael, That is very helpful info. I’m in Austin, so I’ll check with Precision at the appropriate time.
Again, thanks for sharing your experience.
Monty Lemán
3 years ago |Thanks, Michael! The other thing I’m wondering is when the first price drop on a body can be expected, based on historical evidence. Of course I’m tempted to buy the E-5 as soon as it’s available, but I’m wondering if it would be better to wait a while.
admin – I think this thread shows the amount of pent-up interest here in the high-end 4/3 market!

3 years ago |Amazing the number of comments on the fact that Olympus may soon be launching a new 4/3 body. Shows that after all, there are still so many people not yet ready to abandon the mirror and forget the unique experience that is see through the lens optically speaking. I’m very happy even though that this is a FT3 and I hope that becomes truth.

3 years ago |Still impatiently waiting on 43, though not sure for how much longer. I am glad m43 is around, but honestly Olympus & Panasonic both need to really devoting most of their attention there. Obviously they are the top 2 right now in that market, but everyone will be gunning for them shortly & they need to make sure they stay ahead & keep innovation coming. Also let us not forget 43. Even though not fully compatible standards allot of people buy what they see a pro holding or pro ads. Granted they are not the serious photogs, but it really dose influence a large share of market. So IMO the next most important thing is an E-X body, plus it will help keep allot of existing users.

3 years ago |waaah my 12-60 and 50-200 is rusty wheres the next e3 .. show us some skin

3 years ago |First of all, I hope that this is a fake Image! the E-3 was never a beauty.
Second, @YeahYeah the E-30 is definitely above the D90. The D90 faces more the E-620. And that should stay so for the E-50 too.
And last but not least. @Mirrorslav Mirror and mFT won’t work at all, distance from backless to sensor is too short. however who would want to mount a mFT Lens to a E-5 Body anyway???

3 years ago |i also noticed that there is a huge price drop for the e-30 lately. its now only 700++ at amazon (body only).

3 years ago |the next E5 should be facing 1D Mk IV, interm of image quality not just 7D or D300S, because i believe that olympus always creating something batter in Image Quality compare previous model and always provide with feature that others never think about it before. just like new E3, it was the first Pro Camera offer Swivel LCD, built in wireless flash, and 49 matering area system.. i still have faith in what olympus doing

3 years ago |I’m new to olympus…… but what happened to the E-4/E40? I dont seem to find anything on the E-2/E20 either! Or is it an odd numbers only thing?
