(FT2) UPDATED -> Pentax joining MicroFourThirds?
According to Valentin Sama Pentax-Hoya is considering to join MicroFourThirds. No other details were given.
UPDATE3: RiceHigh explains very well why Pentax will not join MicroFourThirds!.
UPDATE2: Mr Sama got this information from a senior Pentax manager. He also said that maybe the manager referred to the Micro Four Thirds as “System” or “concept”.
UPDATE: Jose told us more about the person Mr.Sama: “Mr Sama is not a photographer but a very well know and respected optics professor at the university and the autor of one of the best spanish photography magazine ever (funding member of european TIPA association BTW) and most importantly (for you), Mr Sama is the one, and only, behind DSLRMagazine website wich you have linked to a few times before.”

It just happens that Mr Sama has a personal blog (the one linked in this post) where he speculates or talks in a more personal way.

2 years ago |Why it is not true…
-Pentax has the same APS-C sensor than Samsung
-Pentax can use Sony APS-C CMOS sensor with the same Samsung sensor size (better ISO, speed and DR than M4/3)
-Using the same Samsung mount and flange could use the same lenses and adapters for Pentax K.
-Which M4/3 sensor will Pentax use? the same Olympus/Panasonic sensors?
What will be different to M4/3?

2 years ago |M4/3 is the first established mirrorless system. Moreover, it probably represents a better size/performance compromise than APS-C due to lens size.
Perhaps this rumor about Pentax is not quite true, but I think that ANY manufacturer considering a move into mirrorless would seriously look into m4/3. Developing a proprietary mount requires serious investments in capital (which may be a problem for Hoya-Pentax) and in time. M4/3, being a more open standard, has its merits and would make sense for smaller manufacturers (specifically Pentax, Fuji and maybe Sigma – the latter two have the technology to contribute to future sensor design).
There is evidence to suggest that Pentax and Samsung do not cooperate anymore. Thus, Pentax will not join the NX standard.

2 years ago |It Would be great to have another manufacturer making cameras and lenses for the MFT system. It would make a very easy decision for people to join such system where they could choose cameras and lenses from 3 different manufacturers instead of buying into a proprietary system from one company alone.
The pity is that Pentax (like Olympus) does not produce its own sensors, so it will have to buy them from Panasonic too. M43 needs some choice in sensors too, so Fuji joining in would have been even better.

2 years ago |Even if I doubt Mr. Samas predictions will ever come true, this would be a clever move from Pentax. Actually Pentax does **NOT** need to enter the FF market, as they have a big-sensor and high-resolution camera in their product range with the 645D. So why offer FF, if you’ve already got digital medium-format!?!
So instead of entering the FF market, they could concentrate on both extremes resp. opposites: a big high-res camera (aka 645D) for the professionals and a tiny (FT-)camera for the mass market. In the middle of all this, they could keep the K-range with their APS-C-sized sensors; this would be a coherent product range with cameras for the beginners (FT-system), the advanced users (K-system) and the professionals (645D)!

2 years ago |Well, Mr. Sama just published a new post trying to clarify some things.

2 years ago |if Pentax is considered to join m43 or m43 concept or EVIL. it is too late for them to just consider not materialize their plan.

2 years ago |It sure would make more sense to join a standard-based system than to go it alone with a completely new mount. I wonder, though, whether they really benefit from 4/3 when they already have great APS-C sensors… Sometimes I wonder whether OLY/PAN would be better off with an APS-C sensor even if that would kill off four thirds. There are just so many more sensors out there in that size, whereas with 4/3 you just have the panny sensors.
Now, if they get a foundry building something truly innovative, providing different sensor options in the 4/3 sensors, it would be absolutely worth joining for the glass and commonality, but I wonder whether the Pentax glass would be up to the task. I used to shoot Pentax exclusively, and they have good but not fantastic glass.
Better than standard grade Canon, to be sure.

)
It would be a smart continuity for this company to be with Olympus (another traditionnal compacity lover) the optical leaders of the micro 4/3 consortium…
This is a sentimental opinion. Obviously other ways of thinking are involved !!!

2 years ago |I’m sorry but RiceHigh starts his article with a false statement:
“which says that Pentax is going to join the Micro 4/3 camp”
Well, what Mr Sama said is that Pentax is “considering” to join, wich is very different. And I don’t see why any company couldn’t do just that: consider something. I’m sure even Nikon considered it… very shortly. But that’s very different than finally joining. It’s like saying: I’m cosidering buying a Canon. Well, nothing forces you into actually buying it. You can very smartly end up with an Olympus
