(FT2) UPDATED -> Panasonic camcorder with m43 lenses to be on NAB?
UPDATE -> NAB Press conferences will take place from April 10 (tomorrow) to April 15. I will follow the event and keep you updated.
As you may know on April 12 the NABshow starts. The NABshow is a dedicated Broadcasting event.
And we just received a rumors from a new source (so we can’t say if the rumor is more or less reliable or not):
“Confirming that Panasonic Pro Video dep. will present at NAB a VCR with micro 4/3 optic.
It will enter the market late Nov 2010.
Its have a non DSLR shape, more shaped like Hasselblad.
No more detl. known now, its still parts of it that is work in progress.
OBS
its outside consumer products but thist focus on the bright future of the Micro 4/3 lens system.”
If that rumor turns out to be true this will be indeed awesome news! Would you not love to use your MicroFourThirds lenses on a deicated camcorder? Wow!

Sounds great, but only an *expensive* FT1 dream…
Given NABshow is a “dedicated Broadcasting event” I’d expect a USD$2-5k++ type of camera … unfortunately.

2 years ago |It is great that Panasonic will consider a professional version of camcorder (or video camera) with M4/3 format. People may think it may be crazy, but please remember the introduction of AVCcam from Panasonic has already developed some markets using AVC codec for video recording and editing, and probably this will be designed to supplement its video camera market for prosumer usage. If I can use my M4/3 lenses on my GH-camera for photo and leisure video, while I can produce some semi-professional video from its new pro-video camera with M4/3 mount (although the optics is not good enough compared with traditional professional video camera with large lenses), it is really a pleasure.

2 years ago |Use of existing m4/3 mostly slow lenses for camcorder at first thought does not make a lot of sense? However this seems very reasonable given the GP1 pro model is also rumored about to be launched with a 12-75/f2.5-3.3 lens specifically designed for video use. With stepless aperature design and fast lens that lens with at least 2x would be good for effective 24-300mm reach and more.

2 years ago |This makes sense, and is good news for all (I actually predicted it at the announcement of mFT over a year ago).
Think about it, for professionals they can get a bigger sensor (most pro HD setups are still 2/3″ sensors), and they get removable lens’. For the consumer/high end prosumer/pros that aren’t into video primarily, this could mean a flood of pro grade brighter lens’ that while expensive, fill a gap that mFT currently has.
If they can undercut or compete with the RED scarlet, even the budget mFT lens’, or legacy/adapted lens’ will be very popular with indy films.
I hope it’s true, and actually it’s really a natural extension to the format (consider the added R&D in the format the Pro departments could add, even to things like C-AF and the likes)

2 years ago |Video/Indie folks are already doing LOTS of great things with the GH1 as a video platform, so I don’t know what you’d gain by having a dedicated video camcorder that’s this expensive. There’s plenty of talk that the GH1 (and the eventual successor in the GH2/GP1) is a viable alternative to the much more expensive RED Scarlet. We were bound to see a merging of still camera technology that can take video with the camcorder technology that can take stills. I think the winner in that battle would be the camera technology because of the improved sensors.

2 years ago |Benefits? Well, most importantly you get a body catered to video, so the ergonomics are better, you have proper audio inputs not to mention audio controls/monitoring, real time zerbras, time coding, etc.. All of these things indy’s using dslrs/mFT for video have been trying to work around by using external audio recorders, large camera mounts for handling, and other such things. Sure the GH-1 will be a better all rounder if you also want to do stills but a video optimized solution makes a lot of sense.

2 years ago |I am waiting for this VCRIL (Video Cam Recorder with Interchangeable Lens) for a long.
GH1 body is not a body for video recording.
But, please, forget about it if there is not a GLOBAL SHUTTER.
¡¡¡¡ PANASONIC, please give us the first micro43 VCRIL !!!!!

2 years ago |Don’t you think that if it was possible right now to use a big sensor to make a real ergonomic camcorder, Canon would have done it first ?
In a year or 2 maybe…Processors have to make some more progresses…

2 years ago |I know that lens rings are not so smooth compared with Pro video lenses, but the tradeoff would be simple to understand. If you buy a AG-HMC40 or Sony HVR-Z5, you only get embedded zoom lenses. The price of video cameras with interchangeable lenses are high (comparable with high-end DSLR), and the price of lenses are even higher (due to its high optical resolution and contrast).
You will definitely know the difference if you are a freelance videographer, or video producer. If there is a 3CCD version with relatively larger sensor that can reproduce the tone of film, and more high quality lenses with smoother ring design, not necessary designed for video (because pro video will never use continuous autofocus), there will definitely be a market that stands out to compete with Sony professional market.

2 years ago |I’m only a few booths from Panasonic at NAB this year. Is there anything I should look for?
I took a peek today and they were still in the process of building their test/demo “stage”. They had some editing suites and perhaps pre/post processing stations set up.

It would be nice if you can send us some pictures!
Thanks

2 years ago |If this is happening, it will do two things. It will mean we get a raft of very good lenses, probably mostly primes. Secondly, it will lock in µ4/3 as a serious format going forward.
The competition then becomes Scarlet and Sony mirrorless (which will go the same direction). Unless Sony goes with the same mount as Samsung, Samsung is dead in the water (ok, more dead in the water).
