(FT2) First Panasonic compact m4/3 rumor
This rumor comes from a new source. He told us that Panasonic is accelerating the development of a compact m4/3 model…. expect to see the camera in September/October.
- The camera will be similar in size to the E-P1
- New 12-Megapixel sensor
- There will definitely be a black version
- 720 60p/50p video
- External EVF
- No BodyIs planned now ![]()
- No partnership with Leica (unlike the Lx3-DLUX4 partnership).
We will see if this source will become one of our trusted ones…

4 years ago |Shame on the mega-pixel count. 12MP is too much for 4/3 sized sensor, 8MP would be more sensible. Other than that, I’m expecting m4/3 cameras to obliterate high-end compacts. At least among quality conscious consumers.

4 years ago |I hope the cam can fit in m-lenses and hoping m-lenses company will build lenses for this format. I think the external viewfinder is a bit of silly… To me, if the cam do not come with one (i.e. integrated), I will not bother to add one. However, if the cam come with one… I will be more than delighted. This is due to how we used to compose a picture with the usual informative optical viewfinder. Speed is one of the critical success factor of any premium cam… i.e. how fast a person can get a picture (user friendliness + machine responsiveness). I think the manufacturers want to learn the hard lesson again or they want to build a bit of revolution process. This is the beginning of the process. Well, it is up to them to design but the buying decision rest on me or us.
I kind of agree with Canasonic. m4/3 is for the serious or brand/technology conscious users, who want a compact camera. If it doesn’t get up to expectation. I think it will be another lesson to learn and the buyer will get a piece of history very soon.
The disengagement of Leica and Panasonic may shine or doom. Maybe Leica want to come out with similar product with its renowned lenses/m-mount. The mirror less is very innovative but not the sub-frame, in my opinion. If we can buy a full frame with wide range of zoom/prime lenses, why limit ourselves in emerging product? We hit problem everyday, these testbed will lead us to more problems, if better/equivalent to todays DSLR is not available.
In fact, I feel that other mainstream manufacturers are watching the mirror-less concept. If the demand is encouraging, I don’t there is any hurdle to restrict them from getting a mirror-less cam with their own mount on the market the next day.
Based on the recent rumors from difference manufacturers, these are the testbed machines for production and the people who will be buying it will be the first batch of tester… I don’t paid too much of hope on this Panasonic attempt. As the manufacturer gives me the impression that they will always follow the trend rather than innovation. I might be wrong but this is the impression given so far. The feeling was heighten with the disengagement with Leica.
Go back to the lack of lenses issue. It might take a while for good lenses to emerge for m4/3 even though this format can fit a lot of mounting with adaptor. The major problem still remain on the wide range. If some manufacture come up with a cam that can fit the current/old full-frame lense (i.e. full frame sensor on compact body). I think this will be a hot cake. I am not afraid to see this kind of cam in the near future.
Good luck. I will remain on side-line for this development to be on par with current DSLR standard.

4 years ago |I’ve been waiting with baited breath for the Olympus and now we might potentially have even more to choose from.
My only question though is how good are these EVFs for manual focusing? Are they as slow to react as typical live view LCDs are?

4 years ago |Leica has announced it’s doing away with the R cameras and designing an 135 sized sensor camera with an EVF that can use existing R-lenses and likely new smaller lenses with it to come. It makes more sense then M lenses I think. I doubt Leica will be working with Panasonic to pursue Micro 4/3s. Avoiding the crowded DSLR market, it’s an interesting strategy. The M8/M9, new mirrorless 135 sized camera and S2 make an interesting range of cameras with different feature sets in each line.
