Oups. The G1 is much quicker and even smarter since it does not miss the focus point and return the way the Samsung does. That was a bit of a chock, considering that Samsung is launching their NX series 18 months after the Panasonic G1 and intends to dominate the market for mirrorless interchangable systems (a more or less direct quote). I generally like Samsung products and I was expecting better. A lot better.
NX is slower, but then again, its rev 1.0. It’ll get faster, but then again, so will everything else. Regardless, neither system is much beyond adequate at this time. CAF has a ways to catch up to PDAF yet.
I have and am currently using both the Pana G1 and Sams NX10, each with standard kit zoom. The G1 autofocus is slightly quicker, slightly more sensitive, and over a few thousand pix, gets it right slightly more often, especially in low light and with difficult subjects where it is more likely than the NX10 to go straight to the point of correct focus with minimal back and forth focus movement. So, yes Samsung has some catching up to do. However in normal use the NX10 focusses with admirable speed and accuracy, such that one does not feel the picture taking process is slowed down or hampered by AF issues. In manual focus the G1 is better because the EVF is bigger, sharper and more detailed and the degree of enlargement is greater. The NX10 is not bad in MF, but the G1 is better.
The contrast detect AF technology is most mature nowadays. It really needs time to improve (although I don’t believe Samsung will spend too much effort on this).
And remember that 20mm f/1.7 is slower than for example 14-45mm standard kit lens.
It’s good to see competitors so far away behind MFT because I consider to spend some more money for MFT equipment and I was wondering if it is a good idea to do it now or to wait and see how the market will change. It’s another small element that gives me peace of mind for the near future
Hey! Remember that the NX-10 has a bigger chip = longer focal length equiv = more shallow depth of field.
This isn’t a very fair comparison for that reason. Compare something else – like dynamic range.
I have nothing against the Panasonic – I want a GH2 when it comes out!
@ Jason: Shouldn’t a shallow dof make it easier to detect the area in focus?
In general, the NX-10 behaves like the E-P1 and E-P2 on the occasions I’ve had to try their AF indoors. It seems like they’ve simply overstated their system to attack one of the perceived weaknesses of the Olympus PEN’s. That seems to be in line with their other attacks on m4/3.
Just typed a lengthy review of the nx10 with 30mm pancake, compared to my d90 with 35mm f/1.8. And comparisons to the g-series and ep1/2.
and then when i was about to post, lost connection and lost all of what I had typed……
Anyway, this is a summary: (from the perspective of someone who bought the nx10 for everday/travel purposes, and not to replace my main dslr)
nx10 with 30mm f/2 VS d90 with 35mm f/1.8
in good light the nx10 performs very fast, similar to speed as the nikon. in lower light conditions performs a little bit slower. (taking into account the 35 f/1.8 does not have the fastest autofocus in the world). Overall the nx10 still performs quite well against a proper dslr. The size of the nx10 is the most appealing factor, it is tiny compared to the d90 with similar lens.
In terms of body quality, comfort, ergonomics, image quality, speed and noise, the d90 is superior in every aspect.
These cameras obviously aren’t in the same class as each other but I believe the nx10 makes the most ideal travel/ everyday camera though. The best and only advantage of the nx10 is size, which is very important to me as I need a everyday snapshot camera. That is why I purchased one.
nx10 with 30mm f/2 VS ep1/2
the nx10 performs much better with autofocus, superior lcd, superior image, and better grip. The lcd of the ep-1/2 is truly crappy feels very low res and grainy.
However, the optional electronic viewfinder on the ep2 is better than the one on the nx10. Bigger and brighter.
The added proximity sensor on the nx10 is very useful, as unlike the ep2/evf combo, you don’t have to press the button to change displays (it gets quite annoying when taking photos and having to press the button to change displays so you can review comfortably on the normal lcd).
the ep2 with evf actually feels more bulky than the nx10.
The nx10 is really quite a small camera, just a little bit bigger than the ep1/2 and gf1.
With these type of smaller cameras I would only ever have a pancake lens on them.
In my opinion no one should get the olympus 18mm f/2.8, since the panasonic 20mm f/1.7 is so much better.
nx10 with 30mm f/2 VS gf1 with 20mm f/1.7
compared with the gf1 side to side, the gf1 is a little bit faster. In real life though it really doesn’t feel that much slower.
I must say though, gf1 is more consistent with autofocusing overall. The nx10 feels really similar to the gf1 in really good light, it only starts to get slower in lower light.
Overall the only advantage of the gf1 combo is the slightly faster af speed.
Taking pictures in low light, although the gf1 has a faster lens, using the evf on the nx10 lets me take photos with less camera shake. The nx10 also has superior low light iso so the difference of speed of lens is negated.
nx10 with 30mm f/2 VS g1/gh1 with 20mm f/1.7
i don’t own this camera but I’ve played around with one before. My opinion, body of g series feels really crappy, uncomfortable grip.
Advantages are; much better evf, slightly faster af (same or similar to gf1 i believe), swivelling lcd.
Disadvantages; the nx10 is better in all other regards.
In all honesty though, from what I have read, the gh1 has the best sensor out of the m4/3 offerings. Not too sure on how it would compare to nx10. The gh1 does seem like a very attractive camera though, especially due to its superior video abilities.
Overall Conclusion:
The nx10 with pancake is a valid competitor to the m4/3 offerings (with pancake).
I would not get the nx10 with zoom (or any other zoom for a m4/3 in that regard), as the zoom doesn’t feel that well made and it adds size to the nx10.
The best and only advantage of these smaller sized mirrorless cameras is size/mass/weight. The only reason why I purchased them.
VS the gf1, ep2/// very similar in size when pancakes are used, the nx10 just has the evf hump.
These cameras are not at the level in which they can replace dslrs, quite a few more years before that can happen.
I am now using the nx10 with 30mm pancake as my everyday camera, and I really like it.
Look at the apeture, the NX10 is at f2, and the Lumix is at f5
So with the bigger sensor the the nx10 already has a smaller DOF and has to be more accurate and then you throw in a huge apeture difference so the NX10 has to be much more precise than the Panasonic…
Matbe the NX10 is still worse with a like for like comparison, BUT this test is NOT like-to-like… please redo…
Fixed test ,aperture setting is completely different hence the larger DOF of the Panasonic makes for faster more decisive focusing, useless and pointless all in all.
In real life the Panasonics are slightly faster and more accurate then the Samsung but the Samsung is MUCH faster then the Olys (sorry)
The test here doesn’t quiet prove a difference in focusing speed. The NX10 has a much larger DOF (NX10 f/2 on APS-C sensor while G1 f/5 on a m4/3) and so NX10 has to move a lot between the between the two focus points.

3 years ago |It’s my test.
Even though the taking frames are different,
the distances are same.
The reason of the different is focal distance.
-NX10 30mm = 35mm equiv. 46.2mm
-G1 20mm = 35mm equiv. 40mm
And the firmware version of NX10 is v1.00,
but one of 30mm F2.0 is v1.1, the latest ver.
v1.0 is much slower than above video.
piscesen
3 years ago |To Archer, it’s latest firmware v1.1 for 30mm F2.0.
To samsman, I agree with you.
In general use, NX10 is also good.
When taking picture of far subject after near one,
it is slower noticeably.
It’s the weak point of NX10, but the result of the
upgrade of the lens firmware makes me satisfy.
So we can expect the war of contrast AF performance.
Their competition will satisfy consumers.

Whichever way you slice it, there just isn’t any compelling reason to choose NX over Micro 4/3rds – and there’s a lot of compelling reasons not to.

I didn’t have any test with Olympus Pen series,
so I don’t know wheather NX10 is slower than Pen or not.
I think NX10 is faster than E-P1 when subject is fixed,
but if subject is not fixed, we need more test.
Additionally, I heard E-PL1 is faster than other E-Px.
This is another point to test.
To Jason.
Yes, DOF is important factor how fast CDAF is.
But someone believe DOF is not affect to the speed of AF.
Actually the old rumors said NX10 would be faster than GH1.
So I want to know it is true.
My test just solved my curious, and the rumor is not true.
Until now, someone said FF body as successor of NX10
will be as fast as NX10.
If everybody thinks like you, this test is not necessary.
I think most important thing is if you want to get something,
you have to give up any other thing(s).
Even NX10 has some weakness, the speed of NX10 is
good.
