A lot of people are questioning how big the E-P1 would be with an integrated EVF. And here is the answer!

4 years ago |Throw in a VF as in this photo and an articulating screen and frankly, that, with the current spec, is my perfect camera.

4 years ago |Were can I buy one? Looks way nicer.
Personally I’d rather take weather sealing and/or fast AF rather than a swivel screen.

4 years ago |A rotating screen would make it thicker, no way.
Make the next one with an OLED screen (like the one from the Samsung leak) and I’d be reasonably happy (better view from an angle than with an LCD and also better in sunlight).
Put in a flash too and I would be thrilled. That would be enough for me.
But of course, put in a EVF in too and it is perfect (I’m used to SLR viewfinders, so much that when a tourist hands me his compact the first thing I do automatically is put it to my eye
– but I think I would be able to survive without EVF, the pro that interests me more is that with an EVF you would have a longer battery life, wouldn’t you?).

4 years ago |The creator of this has never looked at a cut away of a G1. There is no way an evf as good as the g1 is fitting in there. Especially with the flash. If you want a crappy GX200 evf maybe, but this camera should be bigger.

4 years ago |You know what? Forget the EVF altogether. OLED screen and flash is more than OK.
I think that to attract compact users to step-up, a built in flash would really help A LOT. If you want to take a camera to a party and it is quite dark, not even a 1.7 lens is enough some times. With a flash in the camera (just in case it is too dark). I’d prefer not to have to take the external flash with me.
Another situation: you want to take the camera with you on your trip to Spain, the sun is shining like hell, you can’t see your LCD screen well enough. that is no fun either.
Still, the camera as it is is AWESOME!

4 years ago |Charles, no one expcets a top of the line EVF like G1′s, but at least if they didnt add EVF they shouldev give us better then that low RES LCD
Ross
4 years ago |I would like to add that added EVF+Swivel LCD would make all my dreams come true.

4 years ago |Any finder (except a hold-at-arm’s-length LCD) that works well with manual focus lenses is all I need to buy the EP-1. I really don’t care if the body is taller than the fantasy mock-up.
Otherwise, I’m sticking to my film rangefinders for my everyday, take everywhere cameras.
If the G1 didn’t look like a fake DSLR (and if black wasn’t so hard to find), I’d already have one. I may end up with a G1 anyway once the G1H starts to drive G1 prices down further.

4 years ago |An articulating OLED and weather sealing. A few extra mm shouldn’t make too much of a difference for an already slightly larger than pocket sized handy cam

4 years ago |I’m with Charles. It’s easy to Photoshop an eyepiece onto a photo; fitting the actual electronic guts into an actual camera shell is a LOT harder than that!
Yeah, IF it could be done, it would be very cool. But having a magic unicorn that poops Wiis would be very cool, too… and not much less likely.
PS — Even in the realm of fantasy, he might as well ditch that built-in flash. It’s so close to the lens that even the 17mm lens would cast shadows onto the subject, and red-eye would be horrendous. Making the flash pop up would be a better solution. But by the time you added a pop-up flash and a practical EVF, you’d have just re-invented the Panasonic G1!

4 years ago |hmmm….. actually I’ve realy no problem with the lacking flash.
I mean…. if it’s built in there’s no worrying whether to carry the flash or not,
but I am used to this from the XA-4 (which also has a compact flash, it’s specially built for it)
and I got used to it and the situations where I wanted to have the flash but didn’t have it are very seldom.
Besides that I really hate flashing, even as a fill-in my experience is that it seldomly looks good.
But as I said earlier I’m curious what we will see from Panasonic and Olympus (the bigger one, end of this year maybe) regarding articulating display.
Since this is really a possibility that wasn’t there with analog equipment and one shouldn’t underestimate the impact this has on photography.
Not looking straight at the display I (and I would say anyone) can’t compose a picture the way like when looking straight at the display. No matter if OLED or not.

4 years ago |I want it! I want it! I want it! But at the very least, Oly, please make a version of your current EP-1 with the full black wrap-around trim (as seen in this mock-up)…not just that lame looking black eye-patch. I am not a buyer….yet. will wait for follow-on Oly EP-1 makes and/or another maker to step up and truly ‘wow’ the market.
btw: Anyone ever wonder how on earth Oly arrived at this final design from their initial, and impressive, mock up back in September? Put both pictures side-by-side: cant see how they got from ‘Point A’ to ‘Point B’. “Can’t please everyone”? yeah, probably. But this design is in no way a ‘homage’ or ‘retro’ to their 50yr old PEN seris. Talk about jerking ones’ chain after getting your fans/followers amp’ed up about that concept design.

4 years ago |John, i disagree, I shoot with my Pen FT every day and I think the E-P1 looks much more like that camera than the prototype they debuted last year. Typically those cameras are only for show, kind of like the auto companies spending $1mil to make a non-functioning model for the auto shows. If Olympus wanted this to be a SLR killer then they would have developed it in that way, but they are going for a niche crowd that gets larger all the time. Those that want to upgrade from their Canon Powershot, but dont want a 3lb beast around their neck. This is not a take it or leave it camera, its just the Pen version, I bet we will see a more complex version by the next trade show.

4 years ago |Yoshi: I believe you may have missed my point. my point was wrt the full black wrap-around look to the overall design vs. the ‘black-patch’.
btw: mockups, made for eventual mass-production, generally do look similar to final productions. This does not. The mock-up is more closer of a nod to the original PEN series than this final product. Mockups are meant to guide your audience to your final product. Auto mockups, as you iterated, are purely for “conceptual” design and NEVER meant for mass production. This, clearly, is different from a ‘conceptual car’.
Your slr-killer point: Of course. I made no reference to the contrary on that.
Your niche-crowd comment: Of course. I made no reference to the contrary on that.

4 years ago |I think this fake, if it could actually be built, realizes the potential of Micro Four Thirds almost perfectly — a very compact camera with DSLR-level IQ. It has compromises for compactness (small flash, small VF, small grip) but is intelligently designed and laid out as to minimize those compromises (pop-up flash, control wheels, collapsible lens).
The one thing I would change is to move the “hump” with the EVF and flash to the right side, so as to help the balance when being held one-handed.
If something like this had existed last year, I might have gotten it instead of the G1. I was rather disappointed when the G1 was announced because it wasn’t as small as I had hoped. (However, after several months of using the G1 I’ve come to really appreciate the functionality the larger size affords.)

4 years ago |In that fake mock-up, the flash is too close to the lens. It would be red-eye every time. If the flash were in the corner, it might have enough distance to minimize red-eye. But really it needs to flip-up and be a full inch and a half away.
I agree with the wish for an OLED screen. I thought the E-P1 might have one, but I guess it is still a bit too early.

4 years ago |@John: Maybe you should rethink this “wows the market”
Because I guess (and truly hope so) the current model does indeed wow the market.
It will never ever be the case that everyone is completely satisfied.
I personally like the black patch more than a completely covered body.
And I think it’s a nice design idea.
Also I like the camera the way it is more then the early mockup.
Nevertheless I’m not buying it, but that’s mostly because I just made a lot of other investments and I’m not rich. If the first wouldn’t be the case, I would buy it.
If it would have an articulating screen I would probably buy it despite the current situation.
Sometimes I just come back to realize that my approach is that I worship every frame and therefore somewhat OK with my analog equipment and photography is at the moment not part of my main work.
And since I’d consider myself as creative this articulating screen thing really is something that change’s one’s way of taking pictures (and shooting video even more) therefore I wan’t to take full advantage of this technology.

4 years ago |Let me say that I like this design so much more than the concept … especially the back side.
I was also disappointed that there wasn’t a black model. Even black colored metal that isn’t the grip. From seeing pics of the E-P1 being disassembled, it looks like it would be easy to change the color of the front panel if they made different colors available.
For some reason, I am really liking the stainless steel panels as it makes the camera look even more well-built. I’m also liking the aluminum top and not so much the white aluminum top on the white model. I think they should only be changing the colors of the middle panel and should leave the aluminum top and bottom alone. Also, the white would seem to go better with black lenses, but they are only offering it with the silver ones.
I’m getting the silver camera with a zoom lens, but on the fence about the lens color still. Initially, I thought black, but now thinking silver because of how clean it looks with the 17mm. Thoughts on body-lens combinations?

4 years ago |@Lu: No, will not rethink ‘wows the market’ comment. This design is underwhelming and doesn’t look all that dissimilar from other budget point-and-shoots. Again, and pls don’t lose this next point as I have stated before: it does not pay ‘homage’ to its PEN series 50yrs ago (as they have stated claim to many a-times)…as the mockup is more akin to that claim. Lets wait for the dust to settle from the original announcement date and see if the sale-requests’ trajectory continues. Highly doubtful.
But Im glad you like it though, but I do not. Since it is just my humble opinion, i don’t think I should be asked to retract my comment. It would be like me asking you to do the same for your “I like the camera the way it is more then the early mock”. Doesn’t make sense for me to ask such a thing for everyone has their stylistic opinions which is neither right/wrong; but merely personal preference.
