Fuji announces their first camera that will compete against the GH5-GH5s

Today Fuji released the new X-H1 camera. This is their first attempt to get into the serious video maker market. The camera competes directly against the Panasonic GH5 and GH5s.

Looking at the specs listed at BHphoto you will notice that this is the first Fuji camera with 5 axis on sensor stabilization but it also doesn’t have 4k60p like the Panasonic cameras. I think that from a pure specs point of view the GH5 and GH5s still have the edge over the Fuji.

What is your opinion on that?

Olympus E-PL9 review by Robin Wong: “can perform serious tasks when required”

Robin Wong posted his full E-PL9 review over at Ming Thein’s blog:

On the whole, I was pleased with the Olympus PEN E-PL9 as a compact mirrorless camera, which can perform serious tasks when required.

Pros: Latest Truepic 8 image processor, superb JPEG, similar imaging and AF performance as higher end OM-D cameras, great build quality with robust metal body construction, new low-power Bluetooth connection and having a compact form factor. The camera survived my torture test, shooting a dimly lit stage performance.

Minus Points: No EVF and no ability to attach an external EVF, stripped down customization options (no ISO shortcuts) and honestly, no significant upgrade in comparison to E-PL8/E-PL7.

For new-comers to photography, smartphone users who want to step up their photography game and travelers who want to pack light, the E-PL9 is a compelling choice to consider. I cannot imagine a scenario in the world of a casual hobbyist photographer where the E-PL9 cannot successfully deliver.

Olympus E-PL9 preorders are now open in Europe at Amazon DE and Amazon UK.

Up to 100% improved AF accuracy with one setting change on the GH5

YodaYeo writes:

One setting that could total transform the way your Panasonic GH5 autofocuses in ALL AF Modes!

Looks like click bait but really isn’t, watch this video and be as surprised as i was.

The figure of 100% better AF is due to twice as many AF samples and corrections being taken over the same time period, in real world this performs better as the AF system is more responsive and looses focus less.

Two caveats to this video;
1 Not all frame rates are improved, best results are in 30p and 25p!
2. This tests and improvements where seen when using adapter lenses and not proved using native Panasonic Lenses.

When you think about it it’s obvious really, your camera is running at a give frequency say 60Htz for NTSC, if your shooting at 30p and the shutter is open for half that time ie 180 Deg’s the camera runs a cycle to correct focus ie, acquire image, process, correct , if the total time this takes is greater than 1/60 Htz (which it will be as that’s the time taken to acquire) then the camera will wait to start the cycle again, the shorter acquire time means the camera doesn’t have to wait, it can run the process again! Hence twice the AF performance.

Enjoy and if this helps please share and like this video and if you would like to see more video’s like this why not subscribe.

Panasonic Lumix G9 review by CameraLabs: “high-performance camera that’s a joy to use”

Panasonic G9 at BHphoto. Amazon. Adorama. FocusCamera. AmazonDE. Wex UK.

Gordon from CameraLabs writes:

The Lumix G9 is a confident high-performance camera that’s a joy to use. The tough weatherproof body feels great in your hands with excellent controls, there’s an enormous viewfinder image, a fully-articulated touchscreen with an excellent user interface, fast autofocus and burst shooting that can track action, very effective built-in stabilisation, and great image and video quality from the 20 Megapixel Four Thirds sensor that rivals 24 Megapixel APSC sensors at all but the highest sensitivities. The composite High Res mode genuinely delivers greater detail with the right subjects, there’s charging and power over USB, powerful wireless features tied together by Bluetooth, and Panasonic’s cunning 6K and 4K photo modes that make it easy to capture a moment before you push the shutter or adjust the focus after the event. There’s little to complain about: you get used to the very sensitive shutter release and visual fluttering during continuous AF, and while the ten minute limit to 4k at 50p or 60p seems mean compared to the GH5, who else even offers 4k at 50p or 60p at this price? Plus you still get half hour clips at 30p. In use you feel there’s little the G9 can’t handle and it’s highly competitive at the $1699 RRP.

Kinotika also posted their G9 video review:

Panasonic GH5s now in Stock in the USA. And tested by Dpreview: “results are hugely impressive”

For the very first time the new Panasonic GH5s is in Stock in the USA via BHphoto, Adorama, Amazon, FocusCamera and Panasonic.

And right in time Dpreview published their full GH5s review:

The GH5S is a highly specialized filmmakers’ camera that makes few concessions to anything but this core purpose. An excellent sensor combined with high bitrate, 10-bit 4:2:2 capture means the results are hugely impressive. Add an external recorder and these benefits remain, even for both UHD and DCI 60p capture. The loss of stabilization means it’s limited to gimbal or tripod work but in those circumstances, it shines.

The camera earned the Gold Award and this is their list of PROS and CONS:
