I echo the sentiments of some of the earlier reviewers that this lens changed the way they take pictures.

This lens excels at taking pictures of vistas, and it is fantastic when taking pictures in small spaces. In fact every real estate agent should have this lens you can photograph an entire room from a corner.

Its very solidly built, I miss not having image stabilization on this lens. Its so wide that you never miss it taking stills but in video it would be helpful.

I appreciate this being a zoom lens it allows me to leave it on for longer when I am out doing touristic shooting. I can take lots of architectural and vista shots at its widest and leave it on when the family wants to take a group photo.

at F4.0 I wasn’t thrilled by the lack of brightness when the lens was announced, however I am not sure if this scientific but on wider lenses similar f-stops seem brighter. I regularly shoot indoors with my 7-14 f4.0 but would never bother using my f4.0-5.6 14-140 in the same situations.

Outdoors it is very hard to take a bad shot with this lens. It has far less distortion than a fish eye lens but it does distort away from the centre of the frame. The distortion I find helps lead the viewers eye to your focal point. In video the effect is fantastic, I use this lens for timelapse could sequences the distortion cause object to accelerate as they reach then od the screen. I also enjoy using the lens when walking the edge distortion gives a wrap around feel to video clips, unfortunately there is no OIS so walking can be pretty choppy, but a fixed mount in a car or train is fantastic.

I used this lens alone photographing inside a mine recently, not having to change lens was imperative and the wide lens made shooting in a tight space a breeze.

I use the 7-14 mm for soon a Year, I have for long time a strong opinion that wide lens is not for my reportage, but Panasonic 7-14mm have make a big shift in my opinion it´s useful in a lot of situations i din´t think about before..
The optics is extreem tolerant for strong light in the picture almost no flares at all, even with the sun in the frame, Its the sharpest one i have. the autofocus is silent…
This is a must for general film reporting i with GH2/1.

I bought this lens based on web reviews, and a lot of splendid comments.
It is very expensive lens, no doubt.
Before I bought it I had read a lot of articles about extreme wide angle lens photography. I found it very interesting. The possibility to control the perspective seemed to me as a great task and possibility.
The lens fits perfectly in Panasonic lens range: 7-14…14-45…45-200 I have them all and these three lenses covers in fact incredibly broad range of focal lengths.
In practice Panasonic 7-14 mm is really incredible tool. Images taken with it are incredibly sharp! Sometimes you can get light/sun flares but as far as I know it is unavoidable in current lens technology and this extremely wide angles of view.
It is quite heavy lens. My G1 body is around 1 kg wit it I think. But it is still acceptable even during long trips. I take it occasionaly with me, when I can predict the usage of wide angle lens during the day.
It has aperture of f/4 wide open for all 7-14mm range. It is nice feature because parameters of exposition doesn’t change during zooming.
In the field you have to however learn how to use it. Our, human way of seeing things is totally different compared to seeing through this wide lens. Perspective is exagerated. It is not an easy task to find the object to photograph. Some scenes seen with naked eye are dull and not interesting, but very often seeing through the EVF or display of the camera unveils very unusual and appealing compositions. It takes days or even weeks if not months to learn what can be photographed using this lens. Sometimes pictures are spectacular! I’m still learning to use it. It will be long but very interesting time!
Another usage of this lens is to take pictures in small spaces – it is obvious. Anyways no lens of longer focal lens is capable of simulating images taken with 7-14. If you want to go in to really creative world you have never been in and see our world differently… it is the lens for you!
Opticaly, and technicaly it is the best You can get. The best quality for the somewhat high price.

I can’t comment on the technical aspects, don’t know enough about them, don’t have time to devote to it, but I just got this lens and am learning to use it. Already pleased with the results,

It is expensive, but isn’t that the case with most ‘good quality’ lenses. Yes, it’s not f/2.8, but, used outside, and in many well-lit indoors situations, this lens delivers.

Each lens has a range of usefulness over a given number of situations in which, it not only performs well, but is also uniquely capable of capturing the desired image in every qualitative respect. Cinematographers train for this — to be capable of arriving on a set or at a location and immediately deciding on the lens which best captures the action of the scene.

I use it on my E-PL1 with the VF-2 viewfinder. The first time I looked through the VF, I was taken by the perspectives offered me, delighted with the challenges it offers. I spent two days with only this lens, intend to spend many more: http://bit.ly/dFuOfC

There’s a guy who uses it almost exclusively, to good effect, I might add: http://bit.ly/e3eyHt

In the end, it’s all personal preference, and all the negative emotion is so much wasted energy — energy better spent on creative projects.

It was the third m4/3 lens I owned. When it was announced, it was the reason to start investing into m4/3, because I felt that Panasonic must have a good commitment to the new system by releasing such an extreme zoom lens so early.

The image quality is very good, I would say on par with the well known EF 4/17-40mm. Distortion and CA are well controlled thanks to software correction. The constant 4.0 aperture is welcome. The size of the lens is very small for its range, the weight, although not light, makes the lens feel very solid. Build quality is good, the zoom ring operates smooth and silent. AF is quick and silent.

The only disadvantage is that you can’t use filters due to the shape of the front lens.

The lens is great for creative landscape and architecture, very usefull for indoor images of historical building (churches, mosques, etc.) It is a very welcome travel companion, because of the relatively low size and weight.

It is expensive, but with regards to its extreme properties and build quality worth the price.

  • In another review, it was claimed that the lense is “too extreme”, too wide. This implies that users tend to avoid the lower range of that lens.

My experience is the opposite. I checked my Lightroom catalog. From the around 10,000 images I did with my m4/3 equipment, about 960 were made with the 7-14mm with a clear bias towards the wider angle: 405 at 7 mm, 102 at 8 mm, vs. 107 at 14 mm.

So really, as soon you own the lens, you really start to appreciate that headroom you have at the wide side.

There is nothing that annoys me more than people who post “reviews” about products they have not used. Holding an item for 30 seconds in a shop does not qualify as “using” a product. Why even bother to post a negative review that is of absultely no value whatsoever???
As someone who has owned this lens for a while, I, on the other hand, can actually provide some USEFUL feedback to someone who is considering the purchase of this lens.

Yes, it is a bit pricey, but it is a fantastic lens. it is solid, well built, and has a great field of view. it is sharp across the frame, lightweight, and unique. Anyone who thinks this lens is big has never held another lens of equivalent focal length. This really is a very small lens comparatively, and m43 allows you to carry a nice wide view for very little weight penalty. Compare this to the nikon equivalent and tell me about how big it is.

f/4 is not fast enough??? Is that a serious comment? what do you want, a 1.8? Hello, you cannot have a very fast lens and keep it small and light. Simple physics. F/4 for this range is actually quite fast and is more than sufficent.

So panasonic is not “crazy.” What is crazy is to spew nonsense about something you know absolutely nothing about.

  • Davide you clearly stated that you only tested it shortly in a shop, but be aware that this is a review section not a forum. Based on your short experience, you gave the lens a very bad rating. 2.5 for such a very well build lens is quite astonishing, and how can you come up with 2.5 for image quality – without having evaluated it. Have you printed? Have looked at the images on a large monitor?

A review should not inform people what you want instead of the reviewed lens, it should give information about how the product under consdieration is.

  • @ArtClass: your are obviously thinking that everybody should be like you. If you like French fries you wonder why the heck there can be somebody who doesn’t!
I agree that my review is biased (see also my clarification in my comment to my own review). But:

    1) I didn’t hold the item for 30 seconds, I actually used it on my camera for half an hour in and out the shop. And I said that explicitly, so readers know and can use their brain to put it in perspective

    2) The review does have a big value. In fact there isn’t any wide angle lens shorter than 14mm besides this (including manual focus or adapted lenses), so people (including myself) are seriously considering this zoom as the wide angle lens they need, even if they hate zooms and wanted a prime. My review is VERY valuable to those, a reminder that they should test the lens before they order/buy it. And in my opinion they will be disappointed, like I was. So, yes, a review unfair to the lens, and to the people who actually need this kind of glass. But nevertheless it is very worth

    3) Yes, the lens is much smaller than an equivalent zoom for a APS DSLR (or – god forbids – full frame!) But, for somebody wanting a 24mm-equivalent or 21mm-equivalent prime, it’s much larger than reasonable

    4) I wanted a f/2.8 prime. Nothing too hard to do. Since Olympus and Panasonic are failing to deliver improved sensors, faster glass was hoped

    5) Panasonic might not be crazy market-wise. But it is crazy photographically-wise. Zooms are good for some, especially if they do lot of serious video. But for a certain style of photography (which is the one I’m interested in) zooms are worthless: not fast enough, too heavy, too expensive. A simpler, cheaper, lighter and faster prime is technically feasible (see for example the 24mm-equivalent for the NEX) and much more useful (let me repeat it, since you seems a little hard of understanding) FOR A CERTAIN KIND OF PHOTOGRAPHY.

So, next time, instead of feeling offended by someone thinking differently than you, you might want to stop and ruminate on what they say, trying to understand if it might make sense for them, possibly asking a question instead of just considering them wrong.

  • @BobBowne’: of course you are entitled to your opinions, about the lens (why don’t you write your own review then?) and about the people. If you’d read what I actually wrote on this websites (including lot of comments, many of them before creating an account, but always under the same “username”), you’d know:

    1) I was a very strong supporter (maybe even fanboy) of Micro Four Thirds in general and Panasonic in particular

    2) I put my money where my mouth was, investing lot of money in the system

    3) I got very frustrated about where the system is going (no new sensors besides the GH2 after years, no serious prime besides the Panny 20mm, GF2 actually a step backward from GF1, etc)

About this particular review, see my comment to it below for a clarification.

  • Don’t pay any attention to davide. Just look around at some of the other reviews he has posted. HE IS AN IDIOT. He is just posting this nonsense to get attention. All of his reviews should be removed from the website.
Great lens. Small and sharp for the format. I like mine.

  • JJ, There is no way to create a second review or to delete the first.

  • Art Class,

Then you should re-do your review with your ratings. Otherwise, the review you so detest will continue to be the benchmark for this lens.

Admin will delete first review after you post a second…if you ask him.

  • DOH. I forgot to do the rankings to the right. I would give 8s and 9s across the board. Sorry.

I tested this lens in a shop. The lens is ok, at least image-quality-wise.
But it has several flaws.

First, the big front lens, is prone to be touched by fingers or something worst, and it will be soon damaged.

Second, the size/weight. Not micro four third style.

Third, the general design of a zoom wide. It’s too much.

Fourth, the price: too expensive for a wide (how much you value your wide shots?)

Fifth, the aperture: f/4 is not fast enough.

So, in the end, a 10mm prime, would be so much better in any respect: size, weight, price, aperture, usability, lack of that weird front lens….

Crazy panasonic!

  • The funny thing is that all of You are right :-)
    7-14 IS a superb lens.
There are still missing prime lenses in Micro 43 system.
Many people are waiting for portrait lens also.
It is the consequence of new system, it needs time to provide broad range of accessories and lenses. Unfortunately our lifes are too short.
    And waiting frustrates us all.

  • Double…no…make that triple immature!

  • Phew! Let me be super-super-clear, and very frank, and please READ WHAT I ACTUALLY WRITE.

My review is for somebody considering this zoom JUST as a substitute to the yet-to-be-announced (or even rumored) prime wide, like a 12mm or 10mm or even maybe 9mm. Since there isn’t such a prime lens, there are people (I know at least two, besides myself) considering this zoom as a second best.

If you are considering this zoom “as such”, don’t even read my review and be happy. If a prime wide (besides the not-wide-enough 14mm) existed, I wouldn’t have bothered to write this review, and I would be reviewing the prime wide instead.

  • Davide, I would appreciate that reviews are only written after serious field usage, and not on short handling in a shop.

I can says that your issues aren’t backed by experiences. The fear that the front glass is too easily damages is quite a bit overstated. I have owned several APS-C lenses with much bigger glass and wheteh the damage is equally likely – never happened anything. Your opinion that the lens is not m4/3 style is very strange as this lens is the smallest and lightest of equivalent focal range. And it is wrong to assume that m4/3 is only about size. If you only need something very compact, a GF or EP body with the kit lens is probably enough, even if you buy a secondary lens, compactness is over.

The lens is for the enthusiasts and creative photographers, which want someting considerable smaller than traditional DSLR equipment. The price is within the range of the competition and the optical quality is very good. The only disadvantage for some is that there is no filter thread.

Panasonic should get praised to design a zoom lens that wide. It may not be for everybody, but at landscape and architecture photography the extra angle is very usefull. While the range of the Olympus 9-18 mm is quite ordinary (even less than some APS-C counterparts) the 7-14 mm is really for everybody who wants to fully exploit ultra wide.

  • A small clarification. I don’t think you need to be very smart to understand that this review is unfair to the lens being reviewed. Already from the title, you understand that I am biased against zoom lenses, so what are you expecting from it? And why I’m publishing it?

I am not that jerk that you think. There is an actual, serious reason why I’m posting it.

The reason is that there is NOT ANY very wide prime available in Micro Four Thirds. There is only the Panny 14mm, but that’s not wide enough (most Panasonic compact cameras start at 25mm equivalent, and the “serious” m43 does not have anything wider than 28mm equivalent???)
Most people are longing for a 24mm, or even 21mm equivalent, possibly a prime, in a small form factor (ideally pancake, but that’s not essential). Since there isn’t any other option, even from a manual focus or adapted lens, many people (including myself) are/were seriously considering this zoom as the lens they need. Somebody might even order it online, without thinking enough about it.

I think this review is VERY valuable to those, a reminder that they should test the lens before they order/buy it. And in my opinion they will be disappointed, like I was. So, yes, a review unfair to the lens, and to the people who actually need this kind of glass. But nevertheless something worth thinking.

  • Immature.
