UPDATED: Aperture doesn’t support your GF1-E-P1/2 RAWs. Don’t worry we have a solution for you!

As you have noticed the new Aperture 3 software from Apple doesn’t support the Panasonic GF1 and Olympus E-P1/2!
UPDATE: Charles-Axel Pauwels also wrote a new app: “This app tricks Aperture into thinking it handles Panasonic GH1 files. To use the Panasonic GF1 RAW Converter, just drag-n-drop your RAW files onto the app icon. It takes about a second for each RAW file you want to convert. ”
UPDATE2: “In addition to the GF1 RAW files converter, I created converters for the Olympus E-P1 and E-P2 RAW files. All three converters are free of course!
Do you have a E-PL1 RAW file sample on which I could do some testing?
Thanks for the blogpost!
Charles.”

Kevin Miller just sent me the good news!
“I have written a couple of apps that allow owners of E-P1, E-P2 and GF1 to import RAW into Aperture
The E-P1/2 versions work with Aperture 2 and 3, and the GF1 convertor works only with Aperture 3
They work my changing a copy of the RAW file to seem like it is coming from a camera that Aperture does support – a e-30 in the case of the PEN’s and G-1 fir the GF1
they are available for 5 euros at
http://facefullofbees.com
you can read a review of the PEN convertor here

Thanks Kevin! (And shame on Apple!)

They probalby only have to change a string in the ORF ifle and they charge 5€?
Ridiculous.
I did it all the time before Bibble5 was out…

3 years ago |As usual Apple is the slowest to deliver RAW compatiblity with modern cameras :-/

3 years ago |haha 5€. You can dowload adobe dng converter that will convert your EP-1/GF-1 raw into aperture compatible dngs for, TADAM, free .

http://www.macosxhints.com/article.php?story=20091222051237502 (this is for still unsupported E-620 but may work for the others, too)

3 years ago |They released an update last night that adds support for a few others, but still not for either of these cameras…I really am baffled by this, especially given the popularity of these two cameras. Love Aperture/Apple in every respect except this one.

3 years ago |nobody is forcing you to buy it… but there are many people who would run a mile at opening the Terminal and typing commands.
this gives a simple no hassle solution to a problem. If the problem isn’t worth 5 euros to you, or you feel confident enough to work out your own solution then don’t buy it

3 years ago |It’s much better to use the DNG-converter, there is no guarantee that the color tables are identical even if it’s the same sensor from the same manufacturer.

3 years ago |DNG convertor is another solution… though not for the GF1 at this point in time – leastways it didn’t work for me this afternoon

3 years ago |spam… yes DNG convertor makes a DNG from a GF1 file… but that doesn’t mean that Aperture 3 can read that DNG file… well thats my experience anyway

3 years ago |kevinparis: Haven’t tried to import one in Aperture, I’ve only opened them in ACR for CS3. Anyway, my point was that you can’t assume that changing the raw files to look like they come from a supported will give correct results as tone curve and colors can have been tweaked between cameras.
I’ve used a hex editor a number of times to achieve that effect, sometimes it work perfectly, but you really should do some extensive testing before selling a hack like that as a product.

3 years ago |I wrote about it here: http://terrychay.com/article/unsupported-raw-apple-aperture.shtml
To some specific comments:
@Duarte: If you can master ExifTool (not that hard), it’s pretty easy. $10 isn’t much though. (I didn’t pay because I have a catapult workflow and am worried about having to convert back when support occurs)
@Sylwiusz: Well technically MIcrosoft is even slower since this is done at the operating system level. I hope Apple speeds up the process, but, in any case, I think the mFT is especially slow because of lens correctin
@seb: Not true. The DNGs that are converted are part of the new spec and a nonlinear mapping so they won’t be readable in Aperture
@Christoph: I linked it in my article. Just for fun, I went through the process, but it bombs out because the E-620 has a different character count than the E-P1 E-P2. The only one with the same character count is the E-30 which is the reference RAW

I fully understand the limits of my hack – and I am not presenting it as a perfect solution… but I have used the app for many months for my own photos before going public with the encouragement of some people i shared it with – including award winning professional photographers. In truth my own photos processed with this app were chosen by Olympus as a candidate for a forthcoming ad campaign
I shoot mainly black and white and/or with legacy lenses. So maybe my criteria are less strict than others.
I have a solution that addressed my needs adequately and thought it reasonable to share that solution with others
to be honest I am not doing this for the money. I am interested in the possibilities of e-commerce and am using this as an exercise on how best to market and deliver a product.
My product does work, and it offers a solution that is future proof in the sense that it leaves the original files intact for the time at which Aperture supports the cameras.
I have been open in marketing the product, pointing people to an independent review that clearly outlines the limitations and shortcomings.
your comments and feedback are always welcome
cheers

3 years ago |Would be great if they had this kind of program for the DMC-FZ35. Heres to hoping apple eventually supports it.

3 years ago |As of Feb 25, E-P1 is supported; the website on this post shows an opensource tool to convert if you don’t have the update.
I’m currently checking E-PL1 compatibility… if you have a sample RAW photo to provide, on a permalink, I’d be interested in hearing from you.
