a little bit of everything…(GH2 vs X100, GH2 Noise reduction issues?)
The dpreview forum user “Morepix” found something really interesting about the GH2:”
1) The NR +2 shot had less noise and slightly less fine detail than the NR 0 shot.
2) I ran Topaz DeNoise on the NR 0 shot and compared the NR +2 image OOC. By comparison, the NR 0 shot with Topaz processing was better in every respect than the one with in-camera NR.
3) For some reason, the NR +2 shot showed chroma noise (blue) which the NR 0 shot did not.
4) My conclusion: Don’t use in-camera NR on RAW images. But if you want to clean up noise at higher ISO, Topaz does the best job I know of.”

2 years ago |I find the in camera noise reduction of my GF1 better than silkypix can manage. When shooting at 800 or 1600 ISO the in camera JPG have less noise, but no less detail than the Silkypix generated JPG from raws. When shooting at 100 and 200 Silkypix does not need any noise reduction. At 400 Silkypix can just manage.
I have the in camera noise reduction set at 0 (zero) aka standard aka normal.

2 years ago |Thats cause Silkypix is crap and not proper RAW developing SW. Results with PS and some decent plugin would be quite different for you. Only positive thing is that its for free.. (Silky)

2 years ago |Regarding the GH2 vs X100 high-ISO noise comparisons…um wow! Actually there is no comparison. I would have liked to have seen the comparison continue in the regular ISO region right down to 100 ISO. Of course, there is noise reduction software that would greatly improve the untainted (in-camera) Raw GH2 images…but obviously you are all ready losing the race and trying to play catch-up. (no X100 for me tho..the fixed lens is the killer).
Regarding frank’s comments above…I found Silkypix to me a mediocre, non-intuitive peace of software that had lackluster results. And it is no fun to use. The layout is very “PC”.
I have had much more intuitive, user-friendly experience when working with Lightroom 3 AND the results are far better and more predictable than Silkypix. I have not used Topaz..but based on the administrators experience I would guess that Topaz surpasses LIghtroom 3 for quality in noise reduction on high ISO files???
(BTW frank, I am still working with a GF1…and am toying with the idea of a GH2 or G3 perhaps..but this article is putting me off some!).
