Andrew Reid (Click here) compared the Panasonic Gh2 and RED video quality: “Straight off the camera the GH2 can look great, but the Scarlet holds up far better in post, where you are able to change pretty much any aspect of the image to a massive extent. This simply isn’t possible with DSLR footage.”
Tyson Robichaud (Click here) dared to make a comparison between the Panasonic G3 and Canon 5DII: “I am very impressed with the G3 files when seeing them side by side. Noisier, yes, but they do a good job at retaining definition and color.”

4 months ago |Is it just me or is the Digitalcamerareview 12-50mm sample gallery made up of the most boring photos ever taken?
I suppose they do that on purpose? Maybe they think that having more appealing compositions might distract from the raw technical qualities of the lens.?? Regardless the reason, it makes it tough to get excited about a lens after seeing photos like that.

It’s important that your subject is centered in the frame, underexposed, or both.
Personally, I prefer shots of focus charts and arrangements of plastic toys and liquor bottles.

Only too true… only too true.
I always get a laugh when people I’ve shown some vacation photos or such criticize mefor exactly THESE reasons. Well mainly for the subject not being dead-center. These same people, however, produce photos that are absolutely crappy. I’m by no means a professional. I’ll have a LONG way to go and learn A LOT. But at least I kind of possess the eye, when it comes to composition. And talking about that… you either have it, or you don’t. Never seen anyone ‘learn’ it.

4 months ago |Interesting comments made by Lars, especially about framing, who talks about the subject being dead centre, this is so wrong centreing the subject, surely everyone is eu fae with the ‘rule of thirds’.
Lars Beduhn

The first part of my comment was pure sarcasm. As was Mr. Reeee’s.
Centering is ofc not desirable in most cases.

4 months ago |the comparison between GX1 vs E-P3 @ dcfever shows the E-P3 is better on sharpness and AWB,.i also like the color that comes out from E-P3 JPEG,.consider GX-1 has the latest 16 Mp sensor but E-P3 used an old Tweaked panasonic sensor.also GX1 is the latest M4/3 product rather than E-P3 6-9 months ago,..
I can’t imagine how good it is the OM-D OLY will bring with a brand new sensor [not panasonic] and also new engine /image processor.
Its time to say good bye to panasonic ,.and welcome to a new Standard of M43 from Oly
Charlie
4 months ago |The EP3 absolutely blew the GX1 out of the water in that piece!!!
Surprising, no doubt, but just shows you good execution can beat pixels. (Except for the pixel peeper pooper crowd.)

4 months ago |Cold arctic winter? If the camera isn’t cold enough to stick to his bare hand then it’s not that cold. He sure as hell doesn’t look cold in that photo.
I don’t think that making a cute little toque for your camera would do a damn thing.
Esa Tuunanen
4 months ago |Yeah, looks like warm weather with all that lack of snow in trees and frost in clothes around face.
Also in cold weather toying with all those lens wrappers during lens swap would get fingers frozen before you’re done.
And really only part of camera you would want to keep warm is battery. Cooling sensor say 30-40C below room temperature lowers noise lot.
Temperature is diving towards -25C in here so between work in outside I’ll try to take quick shot of what trees look in cold for later posting.

Mr. Reeee
4 months ago |Apparently not.
Plus it looks like they’re taking their style cues from Sony NEX lenses.

Well, not completely: 12-50 is an internal zoom.
Just a friendly reminder that we’re really spoiled.

4 months ago |“12-50 is an internal zoom.”
I really like that. The aperture is a bit disappointing, but it’s really nice to have the internal zoom feature.
Mr. Reeee
4 months ago |I meant form, not function. Big, silver, plastic cylinder.
Internal zoom is great, it’s a shame that the lens doesn’t appear to be.
Lars Beduhn
4 months ago |True. I’m really curious about the real world performance and the cost bundled with the new body. At around 450€ lens only I think it is not worth getting. If the body + lens kit is only around 200€ more than body only I’d go for it. I mean… it’s not THAT bad a lens. It’s actually kind of okay, plus… it is weathersealed.
If PDAF works, however, one might consider getting the legendary 12-60mm. I really don’t care for the size.
Boooo!
4 months ago |They could, but why, when they’re making so much money overpricing their lenses?
m.Zuiko 12mm – $799
Zuiko 12-60 – $830
Hypothetical m.Zuiko 12-60 – $1500

4 months ago |I enjoyed Tyson’s comparison of the 5DMark II and the G3, I own both cameras and found the comparison to be meticulously executed and had very informative and it broaden my awareness of my equipment.
On the other hand…I found the DCfever comparison of the EP3 to the GX1 to be quite useless. Unlike Tyson..DC puts no thought into what they are doing. If the exposures had been balanced between the two cameras (and the variation stated) and the same lens had been used on both cameras (preferably a prime), then I could have learned something about the GX1 body vs the EP3 body (which is what would interest all of us). The test being performed the way that it was tells me basically nothing that I would want to know. Although I guess it is an informative comparison if you are considering purchasing one of these cameras with the kit zoom lens. (looks like the Zuiko beats out the Pany kit lens ….I guess it would kill the X kit for clarity). With the two different lenses…it is really hard to say what the difference is in the sensors though which is what DCfever THINKS it is comparing? Not so.

4 months ago |The Tyson G3 vs Canon 5dMkII comparison shows that in many shots the IQ difference is really minor. Small and cheap vs big and costly (the 5dMkII being a “budget” FF).
But depending on your photography, the difference can be bigger than you cen see from Tyson’s test. I would say that with the G3 you start loosing detail at 800 – 1600 asa depending on lighing conditions. Grain is easily reduced with f.i. Topaz deNoice, contrast can be enhanced but lost detail cannot be re-created.
Anyway I would say the G3 is an excellent compromise and also cheaper than all it’s competition – excellent performence/price relation!
So, if the “OM-D” deliver half of what rumors indicates, that will be an even better camera and it’s price quite decent.

I think so too. If the OM-D is a step up in image quality over the G3, has the solid build quality, and a better EVF, it will be a great camera. It doesn’t have to be a revolution, just an overall improvement to justify the difference in price.

4 months ago |Perhaps I missed something but over at dpreview they had an interesting piece of news regarding a new (high end) OLED microdisplay which has both better resolution and contrast compared to Sony’s implementation. Might be worth including that as part of this news roundup.
