$130 price drop on the GH2 in USA! New GH2 kits coming in January?
There is a huge price drop from over $100 on the GH2-14-140mm lens kit. It’s ongoing on all major online retailers like Amazon (Click here), Bhphoto (Click here) and J&R (Click here). Where there is smoke there is fire and I guess that Panasonic wants to make some “price-space” for the upcoming new GH2 kits when the 14-35mm and 35-100mm X lenses will be announced in January. Hope Panasonic will not exaggerate with the price again!
UPDATE: Also the Gh2 + 14-42mm lens kit got a $100 price drop. Check at Amazon (Click here).

Of course the NEX-7 is the holy grail, because it is worth its inflated price tag.

I agree about the price, but it’s actually very nice in some respects. But, yeah, chop a couple hundred off the list price. The EVF is amazing, even compared to the GH2. It looks like HDTV next to SDTV! Focus peaking is great for manual focus.
The interface is a bit odd, probably because my lack of familiarity. The viewfinder on the left feels really awkward and I wonder how it would handle with long lenses. Both hands would be off to your right side, like playing a flute. Just strange. But for manual prime lenses using the TiltyScreen at waist level, it’s pretty nice. With the EVF, not so much. There IS a reason why vertical SLR lens and viewfinder alignment is so popular AND efficient.

7 months ago |I too like center viewfinder and flash in the corner. However, most comments I’ve read seem like people like the corner evf. This is why I’m hoping some manufacturer makes a modular camera with two shoes so the user can decide which accessory goes where, or none at if they want to keep it small and simple. That way, everybody wins.

You can have your Lego house but I want camera instead of pile of Legos.

7 months ago |I’m still waiting for someone to re-make the Minolta A2 viewfinder i.e. integrated but adjustable through 90°. That camera really was a tour de force, as close to perfect (from a design and handling point of view) that I know of!

7 months ago |Interesting comment about experiences with EVF on far left versus center. So far I have not seen many comments from Fuji X100 users but what you say makes sense and that is where Nikon 1-J places it in the middle. Also practical if it projects any significant distance to the back as most do outside of Fujis small finder or Sony’s flexible rubber eye cup.
Pany could be planning another model on GX1 body and they could place the EVF in the middle where where the hotshoe and connector are only lowering it by 0.2″ by using same height LCD screen as the NEXs and then place a combo hotshoe/flash on the far left instead of the middle.
Pany has indicated as well as many rumors projecting that there is another model coming probably the GFX1 in early 2012 as already shown one camera store product roadmap.

And that’s film era fossils like you.
If makers had originally positioned SLR’s viewfinder to corner like in rangefinder no doubt you would be now screaming for that EVF position.
SLR viewfinder was put to center only because that’s the only easy to do position for it and moving viewfinder to corner (like Oly E-300/330) causes additional mechanical and optical complexity.

7 months ago |Sorry Esa, but I owned 2 rangefinders and several SLRs and based on years of use, prefer the SLR arrangement. I can see how some might prefer a side viewfinder, but I prefer the physical balance of the centerline, like a rifle sight.
The SLR viewfinder was placed in the center to align with and make room for the mirror mechanism. It’s simple and logical. Again, for longer lenses, holding, stabilizing and balancing is more intuitive and easier. Remember, it was originally all manual focus, too.
A rangefinder works better with shorter lenses. My rangefinders were a Konica II with a 50mm lens and a Konica Auto S2 with a 45mm lens. The first I used a Sekonic handheld light meter.
Sometimes, everything on a spec sheet looks perfect, but when you try it out, it just doesn’t feel right. I’ve had this happen with all kinds of things, like the GF1, for instance. I was really surprised at how unbalanced the NEX-7 felt (with the 28mm lens, I think), because I was expecting it was going to strike a perfect balance of features and handling. I’d probably prefer the NEX-5 or EPL3 for handling. Their hotshoes are centered above their lenses, btw. That’s just where their add-on EVFs go, too. Odd, huh?

7 months ago |No, I haven’t used it. I am pretty sure that it is a very competent camera, but it is not a target that m4/3 must achieve exactly. Panasonic must put the new VF technology at leat in their next upper models, that’s for sure. But they should not copy NEX control layout and body design.

It certainly IS competent. And extremely nice in lots of ways. The EVF feels weird, but looks fantastic!
I like the fact that different companies are doing their own thing in regard to mirrorless cameras. It really is a new concept, with lots of basic rethinking going on. There are also lots of nasty, lazy old habits and conventions that can be chucked in the trash at the same time.

7 months ago |Did you mean 14-35mm or 12-35mm? There’s a big difference between 12 and 14 and I would be heartbroken to not have their high-end bright zoom not start at a 24mm equivalent.

7 months ago |Surely if Panasonic is going to release the fast zooms as kit lenses it won’t be with the ‘old’ GH2 – GH3 or GF-’Pro’ for sure…
Not saying this as a criticism of the GH2, just that it seems odd that they would release their first ‘pro-sumer’ zooms with an 18 month old (by Jan) body due for an update…
debuys
7 months ago |The 14-140 isn’t a “prosumer lens”? It may be a bit slow but otherwise it’s quite an incredible lens.

7 months ago |Maybe, personally I think the market differentiates between a super-zoom (no matter how good it is) and a fast-zoom…
But then the 14-140 wasn’t released on an 18month old body either
